The Zinn Education Project (coordinated by non-profits Rethinking Schools and Teaching for Change) seeks to recruit a part-time Campaign Organizer who will design the next phase for our Teach Reconstruction Campaign. The length of the contract may be up to, and will not exceed,12 months.
To date, the Teach Reconstruction Campaign has engaged thousands of classroom teachers across the U.S. in teaching about Reconstruction (the period between abolition and Jim Crow) with resources beyond the limited scope of textbooks and traditional curriculum. The next phase of the campaign is to extend our efforts to the policy level.
Building on the success of the #TeachReconstruction campaign to date, we will add a second phase to the project. Phase 2 will focus on targeted advocacy to heighten the likelihood that U.S. teachers will teach about Reconstruction. We will do this with an open letter or petition, signed by highly respected scholars, encouraging school districts to commit to teaching in a meaningful way about Reconstruction. We will begin with our Teach Reconstruction campaign advisors and many of the expert scholars from the recent PBS film on Reconstruction.
The letter or petition will be directed at political decision makers with the message that students should more fully understand the history of Reconstruction. This is an ideal moment, as we are in the 150th anniversary of the Reconstruction Era and the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment. School boards and school administrators influence curriculum, history standards, resources, and course of study. They can play a powerful role in heightening the importance of teaching about Reconstruction.
The campaign organizer will design and help implement the second phase of the Reconstruction Campaign in coordination with Zinn Education Project co-directors and staff.
The organizer will:
