The Organization

Foundation for a College Education (FCE), located in East Palo Alto, California, is a nonprofit organization that offers a comprehensive college access and success program. FCE’s mission is to increase the number of students of color from East Palo Alto and similar communities who graduate from a four-year college or university. FCE is seeking a Preview Courses Instructor who will prepare its students for upcoming course material.


Course Description

·      Maximum of 15 students

·      Three (3) weeks, two (2) 90-minute sessions per week, for a total of six (6) sessions and nine (9) hours of instruction not including curriculum preparation

·      Introduction to basic concepts of a second semester Chemistry class in the PAUSD and Sequoia districts

·      Takes place in January, currently scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting 1/15/18, from 5-7pm, but is flexible


The Position

The Preview Course’s Instructor reports directly to the Associate Director of College Bound (ADCB) and is an essential member of the FCE College Bound team. The Preview Course Instructor will work with the Associate Director of College Bound and other program staff.


·      Responsibilities

o  Curriculum Development & Programming (40%)

§ Work with ADCB to develop curriculum for the Preview Course that can sufficiently prepare students from the PAUSD and Sequoia districts

§ Develop and deliver materials and supplies list to ADCB

o  Instruction (50%)

§ Present lessons in a comprehensive manner and use visual/audio means to facilitate learning

§ Provide individualized instruction to each student by promoting interactive learning

§ Create and distribute educational content (notes, summaries, assignments etc.)

§ Assess and record students’ progress and provide grades and feedback

§ Maintain a tidy and orderly room

§ Plan and execute educational in-class activities

§ Observe and understand students’ behavior and psyche and report suspicions of neglect, abuse etc.



o  Communication (10%)

§ Regular check-ins with ADCB regarding needs, support, and student issues


  • Experience managing students in the classroom, and thorough knowledge of teaching best practices
  • Knowledge of the science of Chemistry
  • Degree in teaching or in Chemistry with a certificate in education
  • Excellent communicability and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of CPR
