Position summary 

The Praxis Project is seeking an organized, creative, empathetic individual in the role of People & Infrastructure Manager (PIM). The PIM will report to the Associate Director and under her direction and in close partnership with our existing PIM, fiscal sponsorship, and finance teams will coordinate day-to-day human resources (HR), operational, and administrative functions for both Praxis and our fiscally-sponsored projects. This position is a great opportunity to grow and expand skills in human resources, operations, fiscal sponsorship, and administration in a creative, dynamic environment dedicated to social justice and health equity. This is not a traditional HR role, though HR experience is required for this positon. Praxis is trying to do HR differently.  

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), benefits eligible, exempt position. The PIM works five days per week and some schedule flexibility day-to-day is available, though close coordination with our other team members and external partners is an important job function.  

The starting salary for this position is $80,000 per year, which is based on required experience and qualifications and on local cost of living in the areas where our existing employees are based. We use Nonprofit Compensation Associates compensation survey data for the San Francisco Bay Area and Bureau of Labor Statistics and other reputable indices to adjust for cost of living. Praxis provides regular cost-of-living pay changes and substantial employee benefits beyond salary, taking a holistic approach to setting compensation.

Duties and responsibilities: 

Human resources and risk management (~60%) 

  • With oversight and support from the Associate Director and our professional employer organization (PEO), in partnership with our existing PIM lead day-to-day HR and employee benefit administration functions including recruitment including scheduling and candidate communication, hiring, HR-related data entry, I-9s, new employee onboarding, troubleshooting and technical assistance for employees using our HR systems, supporting employees with major medical benefit elections, ancillary benefits, timekeeping and time off, employee status and compensation changes, employee offboarding, exit interviews, and terminations.  
  • Document and escalate HR-related questions and issues as needed to the Associate Director. 
  • Support meetings and inquiries between the Associate Director and external employment counsel. 
  • Maintain files, forms, and templates related to HR. 
  • Support payroll tax administration and filings as needed in coordination with PEO. 
  • Coordinate administration of our employee benefit programs and retirement plan. 
  • Lead coordination of employee leaves.  
  • Lead benefit plan renewals and employer-side open enrollment.  
  • With the existing PIM, team-building activities including welcoming new employees, celebratory lunches, all-staff meetings, recognizing staff milestones, and more. 
  • Identify and support professional development opportunities for employees. 
  • Research and help incorporate a social justice framework into our employee handbook and operational practices, in collaboration with leadership and staff. 
  • Lead background checks and driver record checks as required by state law and insurance carriers. 

 

Fiscal sponsorship & capacity building (~20%) 

  • Support new project and project employee onboarding, training, and technical assistance in the realms of operations, human resources, and administration. 
  • Provide scheduling coordination and meeting support for external meetings with fiscally-sponsored project partners. 
  • Help maintain fiscal sponsorship files, forms, and templates. 
  • Support the development and implementation of operational policies, processes, and procedures for the fiscal sponsorship program. 
  • Work with the Program Manager of Fiscal Sponsorship & Capacity Building to recognize project and project employee milestones, research professional development opportunities for projects, and more. 
  • Coordinate and perform background checks and driver record checks as required by state law and insurance carriers. 

 

Operations & administration (~10%) 

  • Collaborate with finance and fiscal sponsorship teams to support smooth and cohesive operations throughout the organization.

  • Works collaboratively with administrative and programmatic staff and external partners to achieve overall Praxis goals.  

 

Required qualifications: education and experience 

  • BA/BS degree or AA/AS degree, or equivalent training, plus a minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in a nonprofit or public sector setting with a focus on human resources. 
  • Experience with employee benefits administration, payroll compliance (wage withholding and SUI), and with navigating state statutory benefit programs is required.  
  • Candidates must have some demonstrated experience with human resources at a California based and/or national employer with some California based employees in order to be considered for this position.  

 

Desired qualifications: education and experience 

  • Extensive experience in the fields of human resources, employment compliance, and/or employment law.  
  • Advanced degree, certification, or training in human resources, operations, management, public administration, or coaching. 
  • Experience implementing significant new organizational policies and procedures. 
  • Experience with or exposure to comprehensive fiscal sponsorship.

  • High degree of professional integrity and dedication to ethical work practices. 
  • Excellent, culturally competent communication skills. 
  • Strong skills in conflict mediation and de-escalation. 
  • Orientation toward and knowledge of equitable employment principles, hiring, and evaluation practices. 
  • Some knowledge of or exposure to state and federal employment regulations and wage and payroll tax reporting, and an enthusiasm for learning more.  
  • Knowledge of Excel for data tracking and reporting. 
  • Experience and interest in working with diverse populations and communicating HR, operations, and administrative concepts and regulations to a wide variety of audiences. 
  • Some awareness of how capitalism and white supremacy have shaped the nonprofit and philanthropic fields and professional norms and standards in human resources is required.  We look forward to hearing your analysis on this topic.

  • Experience implementing significant new human resources and/or operational policies, procedures, and systems. 
  • Experience with and exposure to healing justice theory and conflict transformation modalities is preferred. 
  • Training and facilitation skills and experience. 
  • Experience with or exposure to change management. 

 

Mental and physical demands 

  • Fast-paced work environment. 
  • High level of concentration and attention to detail required. 
  • Time speaking and listening: (range 25–50%). 
  • Occasional travel (about one trip per quarter, when safe) including overnight travel is required. 
  • Praxis currently works remotely both as an internal team and with our partners based across the United States. Leading and participating in remote video and telephone conferences is required. 
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and insurance is required for employees driving on Praxis business; driving record checks may be required as well.
