Foster and Adoptive Family Services (FAFS), the voice of foster, adoptive and kinship families since 1974, is looking for a Family Advocate. Through collaborative work with foster, adoptive and kinship parents and the New Jersey Division of Child Protection & Permanency (DCP&P), Family Advocates help to improve the lives of New Jersey’s children in foster care by connecting families with resources, explaining DCP&P policies and practices, and mediating concerns between the Division and resource families. POSITION SUMMARY (Short summary of the essential purpose of the job)

 

The Family Advocate is primarily responsible for providing support and advocacy services for prospective and licensed resource families. This individual is responsible for researching and applying knowledge of the Division of Child Protection & Permanency (CP&P) standards, policies and procedures to mediate and help resolve issues between resource families and the Division. This may include explaining information to resource families, arranging and attending meetings with CP&P staff, and preparing correspondence.


This individual is expected to conduct outreach to develop and enhance connections with resource families and promote FAFS services. He or she must have the ability to build and maintain rapport with families, CP&P staff and other service providers. 


This job requires the staff person to work some evenings and weekends. The above listed job duties are a brief description for this position. The Family Advocate may be required to perform other tasks that are deemed necessary by the Support Services Manager and/or Director of Support Services.


QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED (Minimum education and experience needed to perform the job adequately)


·        Bachelor’s degree required. 

·        Highly organized and detailed-oriented

·        Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

·        Be able to primarily work independently or in groups if need be with minimal supervision

·        Has a proven ability to work with and meet tight deadlines

·        Has the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

·        Demonstrated ability to research information, programs and services

·        Proficient in Microsoft Office with an emphasis on Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

·        Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation


QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL DESIRED:

·        Knowledge of statewide programs and services

·        Knowledge of social media

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Duties that occupy a major portion of time and importance in the job)

 

  • Responds clearly and professionally to phone and email contact in a timely manner
  • Maintains accurate and complete database records and files in a timely manner
  • Prepares clear and accurate written correspondence
  • Researches and interprets CP&P standards, policies and procedures to effectively mediate and help resolve issues between families and CP&P
  • Coordinates, attends and facilitates meetings with families , CP&P and/or other outside agencies
  • Advocates for families and connects them with FAFS and/or outside resources
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with all eternal stakeholders, including Department of Children and Families
  • Completes follow up with assigned volunteers and handles administrative tasks as outlined in each FAFS volunteer program manual
  • Works collaboratively with volunteers in assigned areas to plan and coordinate meetings and events
  • Conducts targeted outreach to promote FAFS services and programs, including conducting informational presentations
  • Provide coverage for Information Line Associate as assigned by the Support Services Manager and/or Director of Support Services
  • Completes trainings as assigned by Support Services Manager
  • Performs administrative tasks, including mailing packets as needed
  • Prepares reports for Support Services Manager as needed
  • Handles responsibilities as listed in Support Services Manager’s Protocol Manual if necessary


ADA SPECIFICATIONS (Physical demands that must be met in order to successfully complete the essential functions of the job)

This position is primarily sedentary and is located in the Foster and Adoptive Family Services office. There may be a minimal amount of lifting up to 20 lbs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, in person and on the telephone. A majority of the day is spent sitting and working at the computer. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, and reach above shoulders.
