Asylee Women Enterprise helps women seeking asylum to rebuild their lives and their spirits. Asylee Women Enterprise (AWE) provides transitional housing, companionship and community to asylum seekers by offering a safe and nurturing home, opportunities to connect within the larger community and each other.


Position Overview:

The Program Director is a 30 hour a week position, with the possibility of full time employment. The purpose of the AWE Community is to help women (& men) seeking asylum, asylees, and refugees to rebuild their lives and spirits by:

š Building social capital

š Fostering a sense of community and belonging

š Creating opportunities for equal status contact and cooperative action

š Re-establishing a sense of purpose & hope for the future

AWE Community creates opportunities to connect with each other and the larger community through the sharing of our collective skills and knowledge in order for us to grow and thrive as individuals and as a community! AWE Community is built on the tenants of solidarity, journeying together, valuing individual identity, and cultural and linguistic exchange.


The Program Director is responsible for the oversight of Monday- Thursday programs with additional programming on evenings or weekends, as needed. The Program Director plans, coordinates, and directs program time as well as the needs and interests of the AWE community. AWE community time activities focus on English as a Second Language, literacy, education, employment readiness, life skills, empowerment, building community, and wellness.


Primary Responsibilities:

AWE Community -

·      Promote physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of all community members through collective and individual activities

o  Yoga (at least once a month as per ORR grant)

o  Mindfulness (at least twice a month as per ORR grant)

o  Additional activities (garden, group fitness/walking, art/music, cooking, etc) based on interests/needs of the community

·      Foster a strong community and sense of belonging for all community members:

o  Celebrate & recognize successes and milestones for all community members

o  Welcome and orient new members (review community agreement, personal development plan and partner with veteran members for tour, etc)

o  Community Meetings- Empower community leaders to plan and facilitate monthly community meetings for discussions and resource sharing

o  Oversee the preparation of daily hot lunch (enlisting the support of the community whenever possible)

·      Build social capital and networks with each other and the greater Baltimore community

o  Facilitate connection and conversation between all members

o  Plan & coordinate opportunities to explore Baltimore (field trips & service projects)

o  Co-coordinate social and professional networking events with partners

·      Self-sufficiency (Education, employment readiness, life skills)

o  Education

§ Coordinate with lead ESL teacher and all tutors/volunteer instructors to ensure relevant ESOL classes

§ Connect members to additional educational opportunities (online courses, computer classes, additional ESL resources, etc)

o  Life Skills & Skill Sharing

§ Create opportunities for AWE community to share their skills and talents with each other

§ Seek guest speakers and partners to facilitate discussions/workshops based on the needs and interests of the AWE community

o  Employment Readiness

§ Build relationships and connect community members to job training programs

§ Connect to internship and volunteer opportunities

§ Job application process (networking, application, resume, interview skills)

·      Communicate regularly with Asylee Advocate and Executive Director about the needs of community members

·      Encourage regular participation in program and hold community members accountable for participation

Administrative & Facilities

·      Track and order supplies needed for program functions

·      Oversee the intake, processing and distribution of in-kind donations (food, clothing, etc)

·      Work with community to maintain the cleanliness of the space

·      Compile monthly participation hours of all community members

o  Track individual participation in grant-funded activities

·      Write narrative reports on activities and achievements of the AWE community for grant & marketing purposes

·      Develop and implement methods to solicit feedback and evaluate program


Essential Relationships

·      Volunteer Coordinator & Volunteers- Work together to match volunteer and AWE community needs, skills and interests

·      Asylee Advocate- Coordinate to ensure that the AWE Community is meeting the interests and needs of members

·      Executive Director- Ensure AWE program is meeting grant requirement and communicate program needs

·      Community Partners- Foster and leverage partners to facilitate workshops and activities


Desired Qualifications:

·      Experience working with immigrants, refugee, asylum-seekers, and/or survivors of torture

·      Understands the importance of creating a trauma-informed environment

·      Able to work in a fast-paced environment and balance multiple tasks and priorities

·      Experience in education, community development and program planning/implementation

·      Flexible, patient and energetic

·      Experience supervising and working with volunteers

·      Experience with outreach and forging community partnerships

·      Willingness to work with a diversity of people and have experience in cross-cultural settings

·      Knowledge of a second language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Kiswahili)

·      Ability to work independently and in a team

·      Demonstrates creativity in working within a modest program budget and is able to identify no/low cost opportunities in the community

·      Must be reliable and mature

Salary commensurate with experience. The Program Director will receive two weeks paid vacation and select federal holidays. Medical, dental and vision available.
