As the leader of 826CHI’s fundraising program, the Director of Development is responsible for spearheading significant growth with individual donors, corporate sponsorships, events, and special campaigns to support the mission of 826CHI. The Director of Development works in partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to build and execute strategy for long-term financial sustainability. The Director of Development thoroughly understands the mission of 826CHI and its programs, and serves as an enthusiastic, effective advocate of these programs within the community.


Key Responsibilities

Fundraising, Donor Engagement & Stewardship (25%) ● Work with ED to develop a comprehensive fundraising plan that advances resource development goals. ● Expand major donor program with the goal of broadening the donor base through prospect identification and cultivation, and stewardship. ● Lead planning and implementation for annual campaign cycle which includes end of year and spring appeals and any ad hoc campaigns. ● Diversify revenue sources through implementing community-centric fundraising practices that align with organizational values ● Develop strong relationships with Chicago-based and national businesses/corporations through corporate and event sponsorships in partnership with the Volunteer Manager. ● Direct the research, writing, and submitting of grant proposals on a timely basis. ● Manage donor relationships using Salesforce.● Establish a positive, collaborative relationship with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and volunteers to assure the most effective use of talent, resources, and ideas in fundraising; instill best development practices across the organization.

Events Management (20%) ● Direct fundraising events, including peer-to-peer fundraisers, cocktail parties, dinners, and an annual gala.

Department & Staff Management (20%) ● Direct and manage development and communications staff, grow their impact through coaching, mentorship, and professional development planning. ● Support Development and Communications staff in creation of work plans and conduct mid-year and annual staff reviews. ● Build Development and Communications operations and oversee systems that allow for greater efficiency and productivity, and foster best practices. ● Support development and management of the annual department budget in collaboration with the Executive Director. ● Partner and work with the Director of Programs to cultivate strong cross-departmental collaboration and communication to engender an organizational culture of community-centric philanthropy. ● Participate in the national conversation of fundraisers across the 826 network which includes attending Director of Development Cohort meetings.

Marketing & Communications Management (15%) ● Direct initiatives and campaigns to effectively increase organizational visibility across Chicago. ● Direct and support Communications Manager in development of multi-year strategic marketing and communications plan. ● Direct development and growth of relationships with local media partners and outlets. ● Create copy for fundraising and marketing deliverables. ● Serve as organizational liaison with website developers and support website changes. ● Periodically create social media copy, including scheduling it through a content management system.

Board Management (10%) ● Work with the Executive Director to manage Board annual giving and activity, and leverage Board networks, relationships and ideas to generate partnerships and opportunities. ● Direct Associate Board and support their executive team and fundraising efforts.

Data & Reporting (10%) ● Ensure completion of annual report with Development Manager. ● Maintain data and reports as they relate to development and communications. ● Develop internal and external briefing materials, strategies, proposals, presentations, reports, and fundraising collateral with support from communications team, graphic designers, and interns. ● Support Executive Director in gathering materials, data, and reports for all reporting including the 826 National Annual Chapter Review Process, annual audit, and funding reports as needed.


Qualifications and skills ● Minimum five years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and communications with individuals, foundations and/or corporations. ● Minimum two years of experience leading a team and managing staff. ● Experience using Salesforce or similar moves management software. ● Financial fluency around organizational budgeting, forecasting, and reconciliation processes ● Demonstrated success developing a major gifts program. ● Experience in developing multi-faceted marketing campaigns and strategies.● Demonstrated success in increasing brand visibility and awareness. ● Experience organizing fundraising galas and events. ● Committed to working with diverse student and community populations. ● Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make articulate presentations to individuals and groups, and the ability to write effectively and persuasively. ● Excellent judgment and initiative; enthusiastic and entrepreneurial. ● Comfortable coaching, supporting, training and retaining young professionals. ● Experience in growing nonprofit organizations or start-ups. ● Active listener, with an ability to synthesize information and translate into strategy or action plans. ● Outstanding ability to thrive under pressure and effectively manage multiple responsibilities. ● Experience with managing up and laterally to accomplish goals. ● Passion for youth education and baseline understanding of community-based organizations, public schools, and how these are impacted by systems of wealth.


Reporting

The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and is a member of the Leadership Team. The Director of Development manages the Development and Communications Team, comprised of a Development Manager and Communications Manager.

The salary for this position begins at $60K and is commensurate with experience.
