Director, Special Events

THE ORGANIZATION:

Junior Achievement of New York (JA New York) an affiliate of Junior Achievement USA, is the leading non-profit organization in Greater New York dedicated to creating pathways to economic empowerment for young people. Our mission is to teach and inspire young people to understand the economic world around them, plan for their financial futures, and make the most of their potential. JA New York is built on the premise that knowledge plus access equals empowerment.

Since our founding in 1929, JA New York has offered an evolving array of K-12 programs offered free of charge to schools, delivered in-school, afterschool and in the workplace. Our experiential programs focus on three key content areas—work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. JA New York creates partnerships between hundreds of businesses and more than 330 local schools – partnerships that give local professionals the opportunity to help shape the next generation of community leaders, consumers and innovators. Last year we served more than 100,000 students.

THE POSITION:


Director of Special Events (Reports to the SVP for Resource Development and Communications)


DETAILED POSITION DESCRIPTION:


The Director of Special Events will have primary responsibility for fundraising through major special events – both virtual and in-person (Leadership Awards Gala and Champions Dinner, Golf Tournaments) and support a program of peer-to-peer events, including corporate bowl-a-thons and other events, generating a total of $2 million annually. The Director of Special Events will conceive, manage and execute existing fundraising and cultivation events, while developing and marketing new events to add to existing programs. Two Managers for Special Events are direct reports.


Position Requirements:

  • Executing large and small events including selection of location, management of event details, delivery of timely reports on event progress
  • Managing and timelining a busy, yearlong calendar of events.
  • Coordinating with team the solicitation for corporate and individual sponsorships, underwriting, journal support, auction items, etc.
  • Tracking, reporting on and meeting revenue targets
  • Communicating effectively with a variety of stakeholders including board members and their gatekeepers, staff and volunteers
  • Working with peer-to-peer fundraising platforms (Qgiv/Kintera or similar)
  • Developing and maintaining accurate revenue and expense budgets for each event
  • Demonstrating skills using a CRM platform and other computer skills
  • Speaking effectively on behalf of JA in public settings
  • Showing a willingness to put the time in necessary to get the job done well
  • Working occasional evening events and (rare) weekends 


Preferred Qualifications:

BA/BS degree

4-7 years of experience in organizing and managing fundraising events

Demonstrated ability to generate revenue through events

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills

COMPENSATION: Range $75K-$85K
