Position Summary: The Communications Manager, under the supervision of the Director of Membership, Marketing and Communications, is responsible for the coordination of activities relating to the areas including but not limited communications, web content, social media and CEC’s awards programs.

  • Writing, developing and editing communication plans, press releases, articles, promotional copy, and other materials that articulate the CEC’s positions, policies and activities;
  • Serve as onsite web manager, performing routine maintenance (building pages, adding and editing content); control the web content review process and serve as a member of the core web decision-making team.
  • Acts as a liaison with the media on behalf of CEC, and educates and fosters spokespersons for the association; in particular, CEC leadership;
  • Responsible for updating Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Linked In pages and other social channels, with information relating to marketing initiatives, webinars, publications, policy, content etc.
  • Acts as editor for the weekly Special Education Today e-newsletter; includes writing articles, curating content, and soliciting submissions from staff and other sources.
  • Manages the web microsites on Higher Logic including but not limited to assisting with development, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Acts as administrator for CEC online communities to develop optimization/promotion strategies, respond as necessary to queries, and posting content to compliment marketing campaigns.
  • Builds new and edits/maintain existing pages, posts to the website, helps determine a process by which content is reviewed before it is posted to ensure it follows established CEC website content guidelines, and helps create a process for periodic and regular website content review and maintenance.
  • Control the schedule and maintenance for CEC home page content; coordinate with CEC staff who would like a rotator; manage rotator planning spreadsheet; help determine format/content for home page and possible upgrades; serve as a member of the core web team.
  • Manages onsite communication needs at CEC’s annual convention, including scripting and directing general sessions.
  • Primary liaison between CEC and nominators/nominees for the Professional Awards and the Yes I Can Awards; handle the promotion, publicity, and social media and any questions from nominators; and oversee the logistics of the nomination review process as well as onsite award ceremonies at CEC’s annual convention.

Education/Experience: A bachelor's degree and a minimum of 4 years related experience including sales, advertising, membership, and/or marketing experience, event and/or exhibits management, preferably in an association or within the education field; experience with direct personal selling, business-to-business, telephone in-house sales or experience in a consultative, relationship building marketing and sales product/service environment is preferred; experience with advertising, direct marketing, and database marketing is preferred; demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to maintain records and materials in an organized manner, attend to details with accuracy, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Reasoning Ability: Creative ability and resourceful problem-solving skills; ability to multi-task and adapt to changing needs and priorities

Math Ability: Frequent use of general math concepts to develop spreadsheets, track budgets and analyze data.

Language Ability: Strong English language abilities, ability to communicate well in written and spoken form.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with databases, including iMIS. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; strong skills will Microsoft Word and Excel; email communications including Informz. Familiarity in WordPress, Sitecore, Higher Logic content management system. Familiarity in HTML and CSS preferred.
