Common Defense is thrilled to announce the launch of a new Organizing Fellowship in West Virginia! Fellows will join work with Common Defense staff organizers to build a statewide network of West Virginia veterans. This program is open to all military veterans, military family, and civilian supporters who want to develop their skills as progressive leaders and grassroots organizers. APPLY HERE

Hours & Compensation

Accepted fellows will be expected to attend training and group meetings, and will work 10-20 hours per week doing outreach, meeting facilitation, and leading lobbying efforts and other political actions. Fellows will be compensated $20/hr for all work hours, including for time attending training. 

Fellowship Description

Reporting to the Lead Organizer and working closely with the full organizing staff team, West Virginia Organizing Fellows will build and strengthen Common Defense by growing and developing our grassroots membership, and implement strategic campaigns to win meaningful change.

West Virginia Organizing Fellow – Primary Responsibilities:

  • Attend trainings and skills workshops on topics like Organizing 1-1’s, Narrative Strategy, and Campaign Planning. Fellows will also develop proficiency on platforms including EveryAction, Hustle, Slack, and Google Drive.
  • Under the guidance and supervision of the Lead Organizer, implement advocacy campaigns in West Virginia.
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment by connecting with progressive veterans through phone banking, peer-to-peer texting, and direct in-person contact (depending on local COVID-19 conditions and safety guidance).
  • Build and maintain organizing lists and databases.
  • Build organizing committees and other volunteer-led groups, and recruit members into these roles.
  • Work with local ally organizations to build powerful coalitions, and support the work of aligned groups. 
  • Develop organizing materials including talking points, toolkits, and fact sheets.
  • Train West Virginia volunteers to use Hustle and EveryAction for text/phone-banks.
  • Support strategic communications including narrative strategy development, press work (gathering quotes, editing press releases), social media work, and by acting as a spokesperson for the organization in West Virginia.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in relevant issue areas (for example, HR-1).
  • Build relationships with aligned organizations and movements and find opportunities for collaboration and partnership.
  • Perform other duties as required to support the work of the organization as a whole.

Note: this fellowship may require in-state travel and evening/weekend work.

  • Veterans, military family members, or civilian supporters who share our progressive values and are committed to people-powered change.
  • Fluency in US military and veteran culture.
  • The ability to work with, inspire, and develop volunteers, as well as build and sustain durable relationships with a wide variety of allies and stakeholders.
  • Strong time management and planning skills, with a demonstrated ability to take initiative and drive projects forward independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate well under pressure and while working remotely.
