Reports To: Manager of Pathways to Empowerment

Since 1982, Womankind has been using the multidimensionality of its Asian heritage to work alongside survivors of gender-based violence as they build a path to healing. Through our programs, we offer access to a safe place to live, counseling, legal assistance, wellness activities, and so much more. Womankind is an expert in serving Asian communities, yet our services are valuable and available to all. Whether in our services or in our increasing advocacy and policy work, Womankind first centers the survivor by uplifting them to control their own lives and narratives.

The Home+ program is a city-contracted program that is designed to support community-based programs expand their menu of options to enhance the ability of survivors to stay safer in their homes. The Specialist will work with other Womankind colleagues to better support survivors who want to and are able to stay in their homes, and enhance housing stability and safety.

This is a hands-on role that involves both micro-level work as well as macro-level work. It will be the responsibility of the Specialist to provide robust case management, connect survivors to Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) installation, and facilitate home safety repair (e.g., window, door and lock repairs and replacement) through a city-contracted provider. The Specialist will additionally play an advocacy role in voicing the needs of our survivors to city agencies and local coalitions and taskforces that are developing policies and best practices when working with gender-based violence survivors.

The Specialist will work very closely with the Pathways to Empowerment team, which is inclusive of staff with technical skills in housing, workforce readiness, financial literacy as well as benefits and entitlements expertise, to support a holistic and comprehensive understanding of empowerment and self-sufficiency. The Specialist along with the Pathways to Empowerment colleagues will build out a program that is comprehensive within the agency looking at self-sufficiency in a trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive, and survivor-centered lens.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Represent Womankind to work collaboratively with NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence (ENDGBV) to develop referral processes and forms to identify potential clients who need Home+ services

· Deliver Home+ services within Womankind, which will include but not limited to:

o Manage a caseload of roughly 30 clients who are enrolled in Home+

o Provide clients with needs assessment, supportive counseling, crisis intervention, various advocacies (in-person and/or via phone/email)

o Assist clients with Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) installation

o Facilitate Home safety repairs (e.g., window, lock, door changes or repairs)

o Provide clients with other social service referrals and resources

· Engage in a minimum of 120 unique Home+ client contacts per year -- "unique client contact" refers to a client who connects with the Home+ Specialist for an initial consult and does not require that the client chooses to receive any of the Home+ services offered

· Conduct web-based intake form for both intake purposes as well as data collection. Maintain proper documentation and ensure data are collected and shared in a timely fashion for program evaluation purpose

· Serve as a liaison between the client and the city-contracted PERS vendor(s) and home safety repair vendor(s) to coordinate services for the client and troubleshoot, as appropriate

· Represent Womankind to meet with city agencies quarterly for programmatic updates and troubleshooting

· Represent Womankind to work collaboratively with ENDGBV to support the delivery of trainings at least twice per year, to the city-contracted PERS vendor(s) and home safety repair vendor(s) on gender-based violence related topics and trauma-informed practices as well as building meaningful relationships

· Conduct a minimum of 12 total diverse community outreach efforts per year, across Womankind community partner networks, and/or with the NYC Family Justice Centers to enhance awareness of Home+ and increase referrals, as well as Womankind services

· Support EE and Housing Specialist in carrying out some of the EE and housing work

· Represent Womankind in program-related committees and/or coalition meetings to receive updates and trends in service provision, advocate challenges and explore resources

· Special projects and other duties and tasks as assigned

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services or related field
  • Two years' experience with anti-violence work, the underserved community, client advocacy or other humanitarian work a plus
  • Ability to set healthy and positive boundaries with clients and volunteers
  • 9am-5pm Monday to Friday with flexibility to work later hours and weekends
  • Willingness to travel to both residential and community program sites
  • Bilingual in an Asian language preferred
  • Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing to a wide range of people
  • Comfort and familiarity with computers, e-mail, and word processing
  • Team-player personality and proven ability to maintain good working relationships with a variety of people and groups, including funders, community partners, volunteers, and staff
  • Effective planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to be self-directing and highly motivated
