THE ROLE 

DC Action is seeking a full-time Brand and Communications Director to lead a team of communications and marketing professionals to extend the reach, influence, and impact of DC Action and its signature coalitions and initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience in harnessing the power of narrative to advance racial equity and justice, with children and youth at the center. The Director of Brand and Communications reports to DC Action’s Executive Director.

 THE ROLE 

DC Action is seeking a full-time Brand and Communications Director to lead a team of communications and marketing professionals to extend the reach, influence, and impact of DC Action and its signature coalitions and initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience in harnessing the power of narrative to advance racial equity and justice, with children and youth at the center. The Director of Brand and Communications reports to DC Action’s Executive Director.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES... 

  • Brand Management: Accountable for working closely with the Executive Director on shaping DC Action’s Brand to achieve our impact, fundraising and positioning goals across our publications and communications platforms, television, radio, print, digital assets, events, and other communications, including the brand positioning of signature coalitions and initiatives, some with their own distinct brand and voice.
  • Supervise Communications Staff and Contractors: Responsible for managing the Digital Organizer, the Under 3 DC Senior Communications Manager and their work plans by fostering a culture that supports growth and creativity while requiring excellence and accountability. Effectively manage and direct the work of communications contractors such as writers, printers, web consultants, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, and marketing firms.
  • Drive Vision: With an entrepreneurial spirit, translate strategies into clear objectives, action plans, and measurements. Effectively lead through change creating a climate in which others feel connected to the brand strategy.
  • Media Relations: Define media goals and targets for proactive outreach (announcements, reports, advocacy tactics, etc.) and reactive activities (responding to reporter inquiries, emerging issues, legislative developments, etc.). Cultivate relationships with media to help position DC Action as a go-to resource. Facilitate and garner earned media, including targeted media lists, story angles, and supporting media materials. Draft and edit op-eds for placement in traditional and online outlets.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to develop and support spokespersons. Centering the voices of families in our work reflects our values, and our theory of change. 

 QUALIFICATIONS 

The most competitive candidates will possess the following skills and experiences: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field
  • At least 12 years of experience in brand management, advocacy communications, and leading teams with relevant experience in media relations, and multi-media digital communications.
  • Passion for children and young people with a knowledge of national and local policymaking.
  • Commitment to anti-racist principles and to apply them daily. 
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively in written and oral communications. 
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities, take initiative, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. You empower others to act and hold yourself and others accountable. You are comfortable working independently and as part of a team and recognize that work sometimes happens outside of routine business hours.
  • Existing English and Spanish communications network in the DC media market preferred. Understanding of and existing connections with key media outlets that would support and provide exposure for DC Action.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Able to initiate and build relationships with diverse stakeholders and communicate effectively in-person and in writing. 
  • Great sense of humor. Complement rigor and high standards with an ability to encourage fun and laughter in a team environment. 
  • Flexibility. Ability to pivot and re-prioritize as strategies shift or evolve. 
  • In it for the long haul. Not just looking for a one year engagement, but have a long-term vision for DC Action’s external positioning and looking to stay for a few years to see the fruits of your labor.
