Position Summary

Umoja is looking for a dynamic individual who is committed to improving high school cultures that transform the lives of young people. The Program Specialist will work closely with school stakeholders to launch Umoja programming at new and existing high school partnerships and coach adults to implement restorative practices. 

 Specifically, this position will collaborate with key stakeholders in schools to create restorative climates for students, teachers, and staff; provide coaching and professional development to school staff around the integration of Social Emotional Wellness, particularly Restorative Justice, into school practices; support the creation and implementation of systems and documentation practices related to Social Emotional Wellness; and support students to solve conflicts, discipline, and behavior situations using a student centered, restorative approach. This position requires passion and creativity with strong planning, organization, and facilitation skills. The Program Specialist must be firmly rooted in Restorative Justice values and see themselves as an educator, counselor, teacher coach, community organizer, and entrepreneur to mobilize and inspire others around the common goal of excellent student outcomes. 

Location

This position may work with multiple partner sites/schools from which they will be based up to four days per week, with at least one day per week spent working from the Umoja Office location in West Loop and/or working remotely. Some occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Partner Support

  • Partner with Umoja staff in the execution of Umoja Social Emotional Wellness programming and initiatives at Umoja partner schools to support the development of safe youth-centered spaces for all students and staff
  • Provide coaching on social emotional wellness strategies, including restorative practices, and post-secondary support to teachers and other adult stakeholders
  • Support school staff and administration in coordinating strategic social emotional wellness and school culture building initiatives and projects
  • Provide technical assistance to schools around building systems and structures related to student discipline and Restorative Justice, including data collection and analysis
  • Engage and communicate with school stakeholders (staff, students, etc.) regarding Restorative Justice interventions and social emotional wellness initiatives
  • Participate in and influence school-wide intervention teams to promote social emotional wellness integration at a systems level
  • Support the development and implementation of social emotional wellness professional development for adult stakeholders
  • Assist in creating and facilitating Restorative Justice interventions for students
  • Partner with adult stakeholders to support relationships with students involved in Restorative Justice interventions including assistance with intake and ongoing case management
  • Assist in the development and documentation of social emotional wellness best practices
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to support with student leadership, academic, and/or other projects and programming as requested and agreed upon in the partnership deliverables

Other

  • Build relationships and collaborate with other youth development organizations and programs
  • Complete all organizational documentation and reporting requirements for services, activities, evaluation, and program expenses
  • Preserve organization by keeping proprietary information confidential
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations
  • Perform other duties as requested

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of work experience in the fields of Education, Social Work, or Youth Development will also be considered
  • Strong relationship building skills with a diversity of stakeholders, including youth and adults
  • Engagement in a regular self-reflective practice that enhances one’s sensitivity to and understanding of others across lines of difference, as well as, one’s ability to nurture an inclusive environment 
  • Experience facilitating, training, and/or coaching adults individually and in groups
  • Experience in Restorative Justice implementation and/or school discipline and alignment with Restorative practices
  • Ability to communicate in an effective and compelling manner both orally and in writing
  • Proficiency in, or willingness to quickly learn, Google office (Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Calendar), Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the areas of Education, Social Work, or Youth Development 
  • Experience using Salesforce, or a similar relationship-based database system, to record and engage with data

 This is a full-time, exempt position; hours may exceed 40 hours per week. Salary is commensurate with experience. This position requires a valid driver’s license, reliable automobile, insurance and good driving record.
