Job Description


Position Title: Director, Communications and Development

Reports To:    Chief Executive Officer


Job Summary:

The Director of Communications and Development will initiate and execute a robust communications and development program at Bestwork Industries for the Blind, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing employment and training opportunities for people who are blind. The Director of Communications will serve as the key spokesperson and media contact for the organization. The new program will focus on developing and implementing a systematic brand-building and communications effort that will form a platform to launch initiatives with individuals, corporations, and foundations to increase resources.

Responsibilities:

·        Develops, implements, and evaluates the annual communications and fundraising plan and monitors the achievement of the goals and objectives.

·        Identifies and builds relationships with internal and/or external partners or key stakeholders, such as service groups, community organizations or companies, and other AbilityOne organizations to support programs or projects.

·        Attending conferences, panels, and networking events to build Bestwork’s presence in the region and nationally.

·        Educating the public to the effects of unemployment and underemployment for people who are blind.

·        Making professional and informed presentations about Bestwork Industries for the Blind, Inc’s mission, vision and values.

·        Developing and implementing an advocacy campaign including inviting key appointed and elected officials to make site visits.

·        Managing all media and social media resources including the website and newsletter.

·        Training board members and other volunteers in their roles in communications and fundraising

·        Develop plan for identifying and cultivating major gift donors.

·        Some travel required.

·        Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·        Bachelor's degree in related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·        Previous professional experience in communications and fundraising.

·        Excellent computer skills and experience with standard business software.

·        Strong interpersonal, public relations and communications skills, including the ability to make presentations and handle media inquiries.
