Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with more than 400,000 members and supporters. The Congress Watch division conducts public education campaigns and advocates before Congress and administrative agencies on money in politics, open government, corporate accountability, financial regulation, public health and safety, and access to justice.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Our democracy is under threat as never before. The conflicts of interests are piling up, as are the attacks on the press, the judiciary, and the intelligence community. It is not a far-fetched notion that we are headed towards a constitutional crisis of unprecedented magnitude.
Public Citizen – along with many allies – are part of leading the work to prepare for such a moment. We are seeking a proactive, strategic Campaign Director who can help us seize the opportunity inherent in such a democracy crisis or changed Congressional environment and win far-reaching democratic reforms at this “change moment.”
This is not the time for small change and incremental solutions tailored to specific abuses. We need sweeping reforms that speak to the deep and widespread problems with our democracy, and we are looking for a passionate and deeply dedicated Director who will help us achieve this. The Director will join a team of incredibly hard working, creative and dedicated campaigners, lobbyists, researchers and communications staff, who are committed to this project (both inside Public Citizen and external partners.)
The Director will drive the project forward, and so we seek an experienced and strategic organizer and coalition builder to focus diverse stakeholders on the shared vision of preparedness for an opportunity moment.
The Director will work closely with allies to orchestrate meetings and convening’s to create momentum for the work. They will develop content, guide the outreach to widen the circle of engaged organizations (state, local and national), and coordinate Hill outreach, as well as benchmark our overall progress.
The position will include a shifting combination of the below high level duties:
Outreach and Engagement:
The Director will organize the groups who participated in an initial discussion about seizing this moment, and which created an initial Democracy Demand document that addresses money in politics and voting rights, as well as transparency, ethics and structural reforms. The Director will spend a significant amount of time pulling new allies to the collaborative work plan, and thinking through any missing constituencies, as well as the different needs for engaging folks at a local, state, and national level.
The Director will manage the informal coalition, taking the lead on engaging partners in strategy development and implementing the strategy. The early phases of the campaign will involve seeding the idea and plan among a diverse array of organizations, throughout the country and engaging a wide swath of allies in preparatory work. When the reform moment occurs, the director will have lead responsibility for a massive, very intense, national organizing campaign.
The Director will drive the policy development team, crystalizing what substantive reforms best fit in the proactive legislative agenda, what research needs to be done to better shape and support the chosen policies, what legislative drafting needs exist, and then focusing the work to accomplish these goals.
The Director will be responsible for creating or facilitating the creation of both outward and inward facing documents. That will likely include factsheets, one-pagers, talking points, policy briefs, website content, as well as eventual social media, op-eds and blog content.
Education and Experience: College degree required. At least ten years of advocacy, organizing or field experience or a comparable mix of relevant experience, such as communications, public policy, or campaign work preferred.
Knowledge: Significant knowledge of strategy and campaign planning; the legislative process and advocacy; knowledge of online communication, organizing and advocacy preferred.
Coalition Skills: Deep and demonstrated experience working in coalitions with multiple and diverse stakeholders – including with senior staff and heads of organizations. Experience working with state and local group strongly preferred.
Skills: Excellent and demonstrated writing, computer (including spreadsheet) and web skills. Desire and ability to make complex policy accessible and compelling to a variety of audiences. Extensive coalitional and leadership skills desired.
Capabilities: Highly motivated, able to drive projects with minimal guidance, well organized and able to multi-task under pressure; able to work well with a wide range of people both in a team-based environment and within the overall organizational structure as well as outside it with other organizations; adaptable to different work processes, styles and sometimes fluid work agendas; ability to carefully follow direction; winning attitude and sense of humor required.
