Climate Corps Sustainability Education Associate

The Marin School of Environmental Leadership (MarinSEL) is seeking a dedicated individual to

provide 12-13 months of service as a full-time paid fellow focused on the multi-faceted

implementation of SEI’s innovative School of Environmental Leadership program. The

fellowship will be based out of SEI’s San Rafael, Marin County Office, and out of the nearby

Terra Linda High School. MarinSEL is a comprehensive four year “school within a school”

program centering equity-forward and community-based environmental action in rigorous,

interdisciplinary project based learning. To address real world environmental and social issues,

SUPPORT AREAS AND ASSOCIATED RESPONSIBILITIES:

The MarinSEL Fellow will work on planning and implementing cutting edge sustainability

education programs, with exposure to key components of program design, promotion/

fundraising, implementation, reporting and evaluation:

  • Marin School of Environmental Leadership – Approximately 90% of the fellow’s focus will support MarinSEL. The fellow will support the Executive Director, Program Manager, and MarinSEL Lead Teacher in overall management of this program, working with teachers, students, and volunteers to ensure success. 
  • In addition to other specific areas, the fellow will be working on recruitment and admissions, teacher training, an annual Leadership Retreat, in-classroom project support, and fundraising and grant writing for MarinSEL.
  • The fellow will also lead the management of community partner volunteers that work directly with the MarinSEL student project teams by facilitating the scheduling of meetings and maintaining communication between all parties. This role requires continuous, active communication and outreach with students, parents, teachers and partners to ensure the ongoing success of the MarinSEL program. 
  • The fellow will have an extraordinary opportunity to work in their own capacity as a community partner, leading a sustainability project with students that they help design, under the guidance of program leadership.
  • Climate/Energy Program Support – Depending on interest, experience, and time allowed, a portion of the fellow’s time may be spent in direct support of one of our many programs in the areas of eco-education and curriculum development, green housing, and sustainable communities.
  • Proposal Support, A portion of the fellow’s focus will entail working with SEI Directors and Managers to write grant applications to fund our work.
  • Special Project Support, Under the direction of SEI’s Executive Director, the fellow will devote the balance of hours to help plan for and implement new and innovative programs that expand our team’s collective body of work and measurable impact, including expansion of the SEL program.

Desired Qualifications:

The qualified candidate is skilled working across the Microsoft suite of office automation

software (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, etc). Qualified candidates will also evidence excellent

quantitative, written and verbal communication skills, in addition to the following:

  • Experience working in environmental education (or similar) setting - high school preferrable;
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills include case study development, leading small group trainings and/or presentations, and ability to adapt tone to a broad range of stakeholders;
  • Highly organized;
  • Strong critical thinking skills;
  • Thrives working in a fast-paced environment;
  • High attention to detail;
  • Bachelor’s degree (advanced coursework a plus) in a quantitative discipline, environmental studies, or related field or equivalent work experience;
  • Ability to work full-time out of our San Rafael office and Terra Linda High School, and willingness to engage in regular overnight travel in the California region and/or beyond.
  • Prior energy and/or climate change work or academic experience
  • Marketing/community outreach experience
  • Event planning experience
  • Commitment to working in anti-oppression and equity-promoting frameworks
  • Ability to advance projects independently
  • Ability in creative problem solving
  • Prior volunteer management experience


The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Experience in community organizing
  • Academic or professional experience in climate equity
  • Experience developing culturally relevant curriculum a plus
  • Website management experience a plus



Climate Corps Qualifications:

  • Availability for the full-time, 10-month Fellowship program, beginning in September 2020
  • Climate Corps Fellows must have completed a 4-year degree by the time the program cycle starts in September 2021. We are looking for emerging professionals with:
  • A connection to the placement location. This is an equal opportunity position and we prefer to place a candidate who already lives in the region being served.
  • Experience in and the drive to address racism and create race equity with the team members and programmatically.
