Overview of position

Working under the supervision of the Executive Director and Associate Director, the Energy Planner will conduct energy-related advocacy, research, planning, project management and outreach activities related to all aspects of the organization's energy agenda and campaigns. The Energy Planner facilitates the REVitalize partnership developing community-owned renewable energy projects in environmental justice communities and the PEAK Coalition working to replace NYC’s peaker power plants with clean renewable energy and battery storage. 

Responsibilities:

  • Project management of REVitalize and the PEAK Coalition; 
  • Organize and facilitate bi-weekly calls with REVitalize partners, including agenda-setting, monthly progress reports, and development of work plans; 
  • Organize and facilitate weekly calls with PEAK Coalition members, including agenda-setting, call scheduling, providing energy policy and technical analysis, and management of the PEAK Coalition website;
  • Maintain dialogues among NYC-EJA, REVitalize, PEAK, consultants, renewable energy and energy storage developers, technical assistance providers, government representatives and other stakeholders;
  • Attend and participate in weekly NYISO stakeholder meetings on statewide energy market design proposals;
  • Monitor proceedings and preparing written communications to government regulators (i.e., the NY Independent System Operator, NY Public Service Commission, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission). Participate in Climate Works for All Coalition;
  • Research on behalf of REVitalize partners related to their energy planning efforts;
  • Identify and coordinate technical assistance needs for REVitalize partners carrying out local energy projects and community-led planning processes 

Other activities include:

  • Represent NYC-EJA in meetings throughout the City and State regarding energy planning, regulations, resiliency, policy, legislation, etc.;
  • Work with the Executive and Associate Directors on research support for NYC-EJA's advocacy and organizing campaigns, including reports, policy papers, position statements, public comments, and other research documents, as required;
  • Support NYC-EJA member organizations to facilitate their engagement in campaigns;
  • Work with the Executive and Associate Directors in preparing fundraising applications, status reports, and other documents required for NYC-EJA's development activities; and
  • Supporting other organizational/administrative priorities as required.

Qualifications:

•       Masters/advanced degree in planning, environmental policy, sustainability management, urban affairs, or political science, plus 1 year organizing/advocacy experience; or BA, plus 3 years experience required

•       Knowledge of environmental justice/climate justice required

•       Excellent research, written & verbal communication skills required (bilingual a plus)

•       NYC experience preferred

•       Ability to communicate complex information accessibly to diverse audiences

•       Knowledge of carbon pricing mechanisms and energy market designs a plus

•       Must be a team player, yet able to work independently – sense of humor is a plus


Preference for knowledge, skills, and experience in some of the following:

•       Demonstrated ability to develop campaign strategies, experience and understanding of policy advocacy 

•       Experience planning/executing actions, rallies, press conferences, and other events

•       Experience working with low-income communities and communities of color 

•       Experience working in coalition with diverse stakeholders 

•       Data gathering and analysis;

•       GIS mapping and spatial analysis a plus.

•       Ability to facilitate small group and large public meetings;

•       Experience navigating challenging conversations and building consensus;

•       Fluency in a language other than English a plus;

•       Graphic Design, including infographics, report layout and other graphic design skills using Adobe Creative Suite programs, Canva, or other software programs.
