Urban Upbound Jobs-Plus Assistant Director


Founded in 2004, the mission of Urban Upbound is to provide residents of public housing neighborhoods the tools and resources needed to achieve economic mobility and self-sufficiency, and to break cycles of poverty.


Urban Upbound advances its mission through five integrated programs: employment services, financial counseling, youth development/college and career access, the Urban Upbound Federal Credit Union, and community revitalization services.


Opened in Astoria Houses in 2013, Jobs-Plus is a proven place-based employment program designed to increase the earnings and employment of working age public housing residents. Jobs-Plus uses a three pronged approach which includes: employment-related services; financial incentives that make work pay; and community supports for work, the strengthening of social ties among residents and community stakeholders to support residents’ job preparation and work efforts.


Reporting to the Program Director, the Assistant Director is a key member of the Jobs-Plus team to ensure that the program is on track to meet and exceed all stated outcomes including membership, job placement, retention, financial, and educational milestones, while serving residents of Astoria Houses with high quality programming. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting Program Director on all contractual matters and ensure program goals relating to the Astoria Jobs-Plus Initiative are met;
  • Assuring daily operations run smoothly through management of program management and front-line staff;
  • Evaluating the Astoria Jobs-Plus Initiative quantitatively and qualitatively and develop modifications based on emerging Create reports, as requested, for approval of Program Director and Director of Data & Evaluation;
  • Developing a strong relationship with existing community stakeholders including residents, Tenants’ Association, NYCHA services and Management, businesses and other community-based organizations;
  • Facilitating workshops and program-related meetings, as needed; and
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Program

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree in Social Work or Counseling strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience
  • Successful implementation of a similar program, providing comprehensive assessment and case management services to a large caseload, preferably on a performance-based project
  • Passion for working to improve the lives of public housing residents through workforce development, education, community organization, and related social policies
  • Ability to multi-task, work well as part of a team, and maintain positive relationships with staff, Urban Upbound management and other key stakeholders.
  • Written and verbal communication skills that are clear, concise, and applicable for all Sense of humor a must.
  • Background in workforce development a plus
  • Bilingual Spanish and English strongly preffered.
  • Must be able to work some evenings and Saturdays.
