Pro Bono and Strategic Initiatives Manager

Pro Bono Net seeks a Pro Bono and Strategic Initiatives Manager to coordinate, develop and grow digital initiatives that strengthen the work of legal advocates and mobilize pro bono volunteers helping vulnerable communities with their legal problems. Pro Bono Net is a national nonprofit that brings the power of the law to all by building cutting-edge digital tools and fostering collaborations with the nation’s leading civil legal organizations. We are looking for a motivated, collaborative and versatile team member who is excited to join a diverse staff of attorneys, technologists and community engagement specialists working to expand access to justice. 

This full-time position is based in New York City, and will be a member of Pro Bono Net’s State and National Justice Communities team. We offer a competitive nonprofit salary and generous benefits package including four weeks of paid vacation, and an opportunity to network with innovators in the public interest legal sector in New York and across the country.  

Position Responsibilities

New York Program Development and Management 

  • Manage strategic direction, goals and annual work plan of probono.net/ny network. 
  • Manage partnerships related to the NYC Pro Bono Center (www.probono.net/nycprobono) and with pro bono and legal aid partner organizations that coordinate other online substantive law practice areas on probono.net/ny
  • Supervise support staff and interns in day-to-day content administration for the Center and in providing support for other online practice areas hosted by partner organizations
  • Spearhead the development of new initiatives and resources to support private bar and public interest collaboration in New York
  • Participate in relevant New York City and State Bar Association pro bono committees and networks
  • Collaborate with other staff on strategies to raise awareness of Pro Bono Net’s resources to support law firms volunteers, nonprofit legal aid programs and other key stakeholders

Strategic Initiatives Project Management 

  • Manage a portfolio of new initiatives with legal aid, pro bono and law firm partners in New York and other states that leverage technology to expand access to legal assistance and strengthen collaboration within the civil justice sector  
  • Manage partner relationships and project execution
  • Assist with requirements-gathering from field partners and subject matter experts on the design of new tools and strategies
  • Support the testing, training and rollout process on the effective use of new tools
  • Work with program and technology teams to track and resolve issues through our Help Desk and ticketing systems, and to inform product improvement efforts
  • Support processes to evaluate, document and share successful strategies   

Capacity-Building and Program Administration 

  • Contribute to fundraising and communications activities, including assisting with proposal development, grant tracking and reporting
  • Track, analyze and report on metrics to guide program enhancement
  • Promote adoption of digital platforms that support advocates and volunteers, such as LawHelp Interactive, Closing the Gap, Family Legal Connection and Citizenshipworks
  • Participate as a trainer and thought leader at key conferences and events
  • Maintain reporting systems to document work with each state in an efficient and effective manner 

Qualifications

  • JD and 3+ years of legal experience required; experience in pro bono program management and/or nonprofit legal organizations strongly preferred and highly valued.
  • Web-savvy and fluent in the discussion of web-based tools; demonstrated ability and strong interest in using digital strategies to expand access to justice
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and foster and facilitate collaboration among diverse stakeholders
  • Detail oriented and highly organized, with ability to multitask, establish priorities and achieve results
  • Confident and skilled communicator (written and verbal), particularly the ability to make technology understandable to people without a technical background
  • Strong self-motivation and initiative required, with ability to thrive and be resourceful in a dynamic environment with new challenges to solve
  • Ability to work well with others and coordinate team projects involving on-site and remote collaborators
  • Willingness and ability to travel several times a year
