Description

Community Legal Aid (CLA), the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts, seeks an attorney to work for 3-4 days a week spearheading its new Hampshire County Veterans’ Medical-Legal Partnership. The attorney will be based in CLA’s Northampton office and will work closely with the Northampton Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center to improve the health of Hampshire County’s veterans and their families by addressing their unmet health-harming legal needs. The attorney will train VA medical providers to screen for legal needs and will accept referrals and conduct intakes and consultations on site at the VA every week. The attorney will handle a caseload focusing on character of service determinations, discharge status issues, and other civil legal issues facing veterans. The attorney will also serve as a resource for other CLA staff on veteran-specific issues for their clients. The attorney will also work with CLA’s development team to identify and cultivate potential funding sources to sustain the project. The start date of the project is July 1, 2018. QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Mass. Bar, or eligible to sit for next Mass. Bar examination, or entitled to practice under a Massachusetts practice rule. A passion for and demonstrated commitment to serving veterans as a specific client population. Experience working with veterans and with veteran-specific legal issues, including discharge status issues, strongly preferred. Familiarity with the VA system strongly preferred. Experience with community outreach and education preferred. Access to reliable transportation is required. Please submit cover letter and resume to the link provided.
