About Root & Rebound:
Root & Rebound (R&R) is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, with offices in California and South Carolina, that works to restore and protect the rights, dignity, and opportunities of formerly incarcerated people and people impacted by the criminal justice system. Our mission is to restore power and resources to the families and communities most harmed by mass incarceration through legal advocacy, public education, policy reform and litigation—a model rooted in the needs and expertise of people who are directly impacted. R&R has a holistic approach to dismantle the two-tiered system of injustice in this country, working in rural and urban communities, and across all areas of life, including housing, employment and occupational licensing, family reunification, parole and probation advocacy, court debt, record expungement, and more. Commitment: Full-time position, starting December 2020/January 2021.
Location: Flexible, with nationwide travel post-pandemic. Root & Rebound’s preference is that the Director of Litigation would be resident in either California or South Carolina, but we are willing to discuss the possibility of remote work with the right candidate.
About the National Director of Litigation for Economic Opportunity:
The National Director of Litigation for Economic Opportunity will spearhead and direct a new national litigation initiative to serve individuals who have been involved in the criminal justice system, formerly incarcerated and/or preparing for their reentry, particularly in the economic opportunity context, to remove barriers to employment, licensure, and financial wellness.
The National Director of Litigation will carry out a broad range of advocacy strategies including, but not limited to, impact litigation, class actions, and individual court representation. The first year of the attorney’s work will push forward existing litigation projects in California and South Carolina that are underway to create and move forward on new cases in the employment and licensing contexts. In the first year, the National Director of Litigation will also engage in relationship- and partnership-building with law firms and other organizations on various methods of second chance legal work. This position will work with R&R’s Executive Leadership Team to build upon its strategy that considers all legal tools available, including impact litigation.
In addition to leading litigation efforts in CA and SC, the Director will develop a toolbox of client surveys, best practices, and trainings tailored to both advocates in states with existing Fair Chance Hiring laws seeking to assess employer compliance, and those in states without such protections seeking to enforce federal antidiscriminaton law. Further, in the project's second year, the Director will provide technical assistance and support to the litigation efforts of partner advocates seeking to replicate these efforts in at least two additional states. Finally, the Director will work to build and convene a national coalition of advocates and organizations seeking to advance these efforts in states across the U.S. for the purpose of cross-sharing technical assistance and best practices, elevating successes to inform national media, and shifting national public opinion.
While expected to work with a variety of partners across R&R’s office sites, the Director of Litigation will receive a strong orientation and ongoing training from R&R on its model of education, advocacy, and policy reform. This will include training on our model from the R&R Deputy Director(s), senior attorneys, and leadership team. Training and onboarding will consist of a high level of ongoing learning and professional development opportunities, while also working closely with the Executive Director and Deputy Directors to build a high level strategy.
