Job Summary

Free Minds is a program of FC’s College Hub. The mission of the College Hub—Austin’s first college support center for low-income, nontraditional students—is to empower those who face barriers to higher education so that all students in Central Texas have the tools to realize their goals, from application to graduation.

In Free Minds, students take a two-semester course in the humanities taught by professors from Austin Community College and the University of Texas. As an affiliate of the Clemente Course in Humanities, a national education organization, Free Minds harnesses the power of the humanities to help motivated adults overcome social and economic limitations and connect with institutions of higher education.

We are currently providing all programming remotely due to the pandemic. Free Minds will transition to in-person programming gradually as pandemic conditions improve, in alignment with partners and local public health guidelines.

The Free Minds Community Liaison will take the lead on student recruitment and creating and building community relationships. He/she will coordinate our community writing workshops, as well as provide administrative and communication assistance to the Free Minds staff.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Free Minds Community Liaison reports to the Free Minds Academic Director/Coordinator and is responsible for:

  • Leading recruitment of Free Minds students and conducting outreach for the College Hub
  • Serving as a community liaison, including maintaining and building community connections, making presentations to community partners, keeping all recruitment records, and assisting with recruitment strategy
  • Coordinating and developing ongoing community workshops in writing and other topics relevant to nontraditional students
  • Writing, editing and designing bi-monthly e-newsletter and sending periodic emails to program constituents
  • Creating and updating program communication materials, including website, social media, one-sheets, and other printed materials
  • Creating class handouts and course packets, and providing administrative support for the program
  • Planning and participating in special events, including College Fairs, end-of-semester celebrations, readings, graduation ceremony and other College Hub events
  • Assisting in selection of Free Minds students, including communicating with applicants, scheduling interviews, and providing on-site support during interview period
  • Serving as an additional support to Free Minds students and graduates both in and out of the classroom, making referrals to other College Hub services as appropriate

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a humanities field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience creating written materials for broad distribution
  • Experience developing and maintaining community partnerships, including making presentations to diverse audiences; comfort in group and/or classroom facilitation
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite, including Word, and PowerPoint
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate

  • This is a full-time benefits eligible position that pays between $18-19 per hour
  • with an anticipated start date in June 2021. Evening and weekend hours should be anticipated.
