The Director of Communications is a member of the Leadership Team and leads the external communications agenda of CPC. The Director of Communications is a part of the development and communications team of CPC and works closely with the executive office, the policy and public affairs team, and the strategy team to ensure brand management and increased strategic and effective impact and awareness of CPC. This role is responsible for managing all communications activities and building external relationships with the organization’s constituencies, including funders, media, and the diverse communities we serve to advance CPC’s vision and mission.
Planning and development
- Set and guide the strategy for all communications, website, and media and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate CPC’s vision, mission and values.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan across CPC’s target audiences in collaboration with CPC’s leadership team to be aligned with CPC’s strategic direction.
- Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities, including but not limited to communications calendars, guidelines, policies, and monitoring tools.
- Lead the generation of content across communications channels that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. Decide who, where, and when to disseminate. Write, edit, and tailor content and messages for a variety of audiences, including but not limited to public officials, media, community members, partner organizations, donors, funders, and sponsors.
- Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, e-newsletters, brochures, annual report, and CPC's website
- Manage CPC’s online presence, including the creation, maintenance, and monitoring of social media handles/accounts; generation, support, and monitoring of social media content; and coordination of webpage maintenance
- Track and measure the levels of engagement over time and report progress
- Coordinate and monitor vendor performance with various online, print, and other media platforms to ensure quality communications over time, adjusting when needed. Stay on timeline and on budget with projects
- Manage all media contacts. Coordinate the development, translations, and dissemination of media advisories and press releases. Coordinate and support press conferences. Build CPC’s media contacts/presence, including but not limited to pitching op-eds, seeking opportunities for interviews, placement, etc.
- Support development, policy, program, and special projects outcomes with strategic communications design and management as needed
CPC is seeking an accomplished, culturally and linguistically competent, Director of Communications who has at least 5 years of communications experience, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role within a complex (number and variety of constituents) nonprofit entity, and covering areas such as website content, newsletters, and donor communications. The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical.
Specific requirements include:
- Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies
- Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of current events, especially city, state, and federal public policy that affects low-income, immigrant, and Asian American and Pacific Islander New Yorkers, and ability to articulate these policy issues, changes, and updates into accessible, public-facing language
- Experience outreaching to and pitching to local media outlets, including ethnic press and/or neighborhood-based press
- A strong track record as an implementer and influencer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
- Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to "manage by influence"
- High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both strategic and tactical levels
- Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
- Background working in and for diverse communities
- Self-starter, able to work independently, and go-getting; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
- Fluency in Chinese required; will need to coordinate and review written and oral translations of messaging
