Since 1991, ZUMIX has offered award winning music & creative media programs for youth in the Greater Boston area ages 7-18. We serve 1,000 young people annually through out-of-school programing, as well as in-school arts expansion initiatives. We are investing in our Pathways department; we are increasing our commitment to serving our community, which was hard-hit during the pandemic; we are embarking on a new music partnership with the Boston Public Schools and neighboring districts; and we are evolving with the changing needs of our constituents.

Position

The Pathways Program at ZUMIX is designed to provide academic, career, leadership, and wrap-around support services for young members of our community. The Pathways Coordinator is a vital member of the Program Leadership Team, helping with intake, outreach, and other cross-programmatic efforts. They are responsible for all aspects of the Pathways Program including helping ZUMIX participants navigate the transition from Middle School to High School, leading the cohort of High School Juniors and Seniors through the college and career preparation process, matching ZUMIX youth with volunteer tutors as needed, maintaining and developing relationships with strategic partners to support wrap-around services, co-facilitating the ZUMIX Teen Council and Leaders in Training cohorts, and curating the Pathways Speaker Series.

Reports to: Director of Programs

Primary Responsibilities:

Leadership Development 

● Act as a member of the Program Leadership Team (PLT), attend regular meetings and participate in program-wide endeavors; help out with ZUMIX-wide events as needed 

● Work with PLT members to facilitate the ZUMIX Teen Council 

● Work with PLT members to facilitate the ZUMIX Leaders in Training youth staff members

● Support ZUMIX students through educational and career exploration

● Lead ZUMIX’s hiring process for youth staff

Academic Support 

● Identify ZUMIX youth who need academic support 

● Recruit, train, and match volunteer tutors with young people 

● Liaise with schools, teachers, guidance counselors, and parents regarding academic support 

College & Career Readiness 

● Provide training focused on the high school and college application process including application advising, essay support, and financial aid advice 

● Meet with ZUMIX participants in groups and individually to discuss their post-ZUMIX education and career plans 

● Implement skill-based training to make youth marketable in the workforce including resume workshops, interviewing, and networking 

● Maintain and develop relationships with local universities, educational institutions, and internship/training programs as gateways for our youth

● Curate an annual speaker series to educate young people about job opportunities and career paths 

Family Supports

● Collaborate with the Program Leadership Team to identify wraparound support needs of youth and their families, including access to healthy food, housing, and mental health resources

● Work with appropriate community-based organizations and agencies to continue ZUMIX’s Mutual Support efforts, enabling families to access resources to help meet their needs

● Mobilize volunteers from within the ZUMIX and the East Boston community to strengthen a network of connection and mutual support between families

Candidate Profile and Qualifications:

 ● 2+ years experience working with young people, ideally in a nonprofit or community-based setting

 ● Excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills

 ● Strong organizational and communication skills 

 ● The ability to work independently and as part of a team 

 ● The desire to work with diverse constituencies 

 ● Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously 

 ● Ability to see the big picture without losing sight of the details 

 ● Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills 

 ● Professional and mature 

 ● Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

 ● Graphic design experience, or excitement to learn

 ● Verbal and written proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese

 ● Availability to work weekday evenings, and occasional weekends

 ● Love of music, ease of character, and a good sense of humor
