About Food For Free

Food For Free is a Cambridge-based, non-profit organization dedicated to providing the Greater Boston community with reliable access to fresh and nutritious food. Food For Free accomplishes its mission through food rescue, partnerships with schools, colleges, and traditional food organizations, as well as our own direct service programs. In 2019, Food For Free distributed more than two million pounds of nutritious food to more than 30,000 people throughout Greater Boston.


Summary

Food For Free is seeking an experienced Volunteer Manager to support and develop the volunteer experience in programs including: Cambridge and Somerville Weekend Backpack Programs, Home Delivery, School and Summer Markets, and Field of Greens. This position will play an important role in the organization’s growth to put scalable volunteer systems in place, while filling immediate volunteer needs. The ideal candidate will have experience managing volunteer processes in a direct-service context and a commitment to social justice. This is an hourly position at 30 hours per week, with possible increase to 40.  


Areas of Responsibility

  • Develop and implement comprehensive volunteer recruitment, onboarding, and placement processes
  • Provide vision and direction to create a robust volunteer base and scalable systems to allow for future programming at Food For Free
  • Assess current volunteer database/systems and identify areas of optimization
  • Work with Program team to meet and anticipate program volunteer needs while working collaboratively with the Development and Marketing team
  • Manage corporate and group volunteer experiences
  • Increase volunteer engagement by:
  • Creating, planning, and executing volunteer appreciation events in collaboration with Programs staff
  • Working with Program Manager to foster positive volunteer culture and experience
  • Working with Development team to improve volunteer communications
  • Maintain volunteer records and report volunteer data to Programs and Development
  • Regularly support program team and volunteers on-site at programs
  • Support other teams’ volunteer requirements, as needed


Qualifications

  • 4-5 years experience in all aspects of volunteer management, including designing and implementing volunteer policies, processes, and systems
  • Expertise in volunteer management software and systems
  • Commitment to social justice, and food justice in particular
  • Forward-thinking, strategic, and systematic thinker
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail while understanding the big picture
  • A high level of organization and time-management skills
  • Demonstrating initiative in the ability to identify, own, and work on projects through to completion
  • Ability to think on your feet and problem-solve in the moment
  • Ability to work on your feet for several hours at a time
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds repeatedly during a shift
  • Ability to manage hands-on work with volunteers and delegate in a positive manner
  • A warm and professional demeanor
