The Communications Director will be part of the SFUSD Communications team and will lead planning for and implementing strategic communications as well as play a critical role in ensuring diverse SFUSD families and staff have access to critical information. This position will coordinate with leadership from various divisions within SFUSD to develop, manage and refine a strategy for proactively communicating with diverse stakeholders utilizing multiple approaches. The Communications Director reports to the SFUSD Deputy Superintendent for Communications and Strategic Partnerships.

We expect our Communications Director will:

Demonstrate a Leadership Mindset

● Develop outreach and engagement strategies with clear and measurable goals for SFUSD policies and strategic initiatives Manage to Results

● Lead the creation and improvement of user-centered multi-channel communications, outreach, and information for diverse audiences, including prospective and current SFUSD families and staff Manage Teams

● Build working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to inform communications needs and strategy Manage Relationships

● Support the continuous improvement of the district’s employee-focused and parent-focused communications’ channels including but not limited to website, newsletters, etc.

● Manage the district’s crisis communications support for school site and districtwide incidents


The strongest candidates will have:

● Knowledge of urban public school landscapes including policies, politics, education practices and funding

● Awareness and experience in the use of multi-channel community engagement and marketing ● Experience with public policy

● Ability to engage, inspire, and influence people

● Demonstrated record of creating, managing and implementing comprehensive communications plans

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to convey information to a variety of audiences

● Ability to quickly master new technology and systems

● Strong analytic and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy

● Ability to coordinate and manage complex cross-functional projects with multiple competing priorities or perspectives

● Ability to manage ambiguity, risk, and changing direction of projects and strategies

● Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and management skills and high professional standards for work quality

● Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations that require sound decision making

Desirable Qualifications:

● Experience facilitating groups of people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and points of view

● Experience working in a large complex government agency, ideally public education sector

● Ability to maintain highly organized methods of operating within a complex system

● Comfort with multimedia tools, including Adobe, Google Suite

● Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Cantonese


Minimum Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited college or university; advanced degree preferred

● Four (4) years of full-time verifiable professional experience in public affairs, public information, editorial, newspaper, magazine, radio, television, public relations, social media, digital engagement, advertising or similar work involving collection and dissemination of news and information wherein the preparation or direction of informational material for large diverse audiences.

● Strategic leadership and management experience; in a K-12 public educational setting preferred
