Coastkeeper is seeking a Marine Restoration Director who will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of designing, planning, implementing, managing, and monitoring the organization’s efforts to restore eelgrass, oyster, and other Southern California nearshore habitats. This unique position requires a highly self-motivated individual who is interested in growing, leading, and sustaining the organization’s restoration program. It is the organization’s ambition to expand the current program.


This position is based in Coastkeeper’s Costa Mesa office. However, there is flexibility on some remote work. The position requires some local travel for project implementation, field visits, and to interface with partner agencies.


Primary Responsibilities:

·     Design and implement marine restoration projects including setting priorities, strategies, goals and objectives.

·     Develop grant proposals, project budgets, and application packages. Maintain program financials and reporting.

·     Conduct biological surveys of nearshore species, process and analyze field samples, and maintain diving and field equipment.

·     Develop written assessments, reports, and comprehensive data analysis.

·     Maintain partnerships with local agency partners, knowledgeable scientific advisors, and stakeholders to facilitate project design and to develop supplemental resources, such as technical advice, volunteers, and in-kind donations.

·     Secure and assure compliance with federal, state, and local permits and regulations.

·     Research and creatively seek out grant opportunities, partnerships and other potential funding sources.

·     Recruit and manage student interns to assist in projects.

·     Communicate program outcomes with a wide variety of audiences.


Desired Skills and Experience:

·     Master’s degree or higher in marine biology, oceanography, or other marine science.

·     Passion for marine conservation, research and the mission of the organization.

·     Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with team members, agency staff, students/interns, stakeholders, and members of the community.

·     Experience with the maintenance and use of marine field and laboratory equipment.

·     Certified by a nationally recognized diving organization.

·     Broad scientific and technical expertise in research related to underwater data collection, diving, habitat surveys, and water quality assessment.

·     Experience with marine vessel operations, operations, open water diving operations, and boating safety procedures.

·     Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

·     Demonstrated experience in fundraising.

·     Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including volunteers, workloads, and finances under deadlines.

·     Ability and willingness to be able to work occasionally irregular hours such as early mornings and weekends.
