Organization Overview

The Fuel Fund of Maryland is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that has been providing life-saving resources for vulnerable Maryland families by way of heat and home utility needs since 1981. The Bill Assistance initiative is part of the Affordability Solutions team, and focuses on providing urgent assistance, helping clients avoid crisis’s such as losing power or risking eviction from their homes.

Position Description

The Program Specialist in on the Bill Assistance team works in collaboration with the Lead Program Specialist, the Director of Affordability Solutions, and other Fuel Fund Staff to structure and support the urgent work of the Bill Assistance initiative. 

Under the direct supervision of the Lead Program Specialist, the Program Specialist will:

o Respond to inquiries for help with utility bills

o Use Salesforce and other tools to process cases and to make commitments on behalf of clients

o Work individually and with other FFM personnel to maintain timely, coordinated and consistent services to all clients

o  Process phone and online utility assistance applications

o  Address voice mails from assigned telephone

o  Interact with other community partners as needed to assist clients

o Other duties assigned, such as, attending meetings in or out of the office, and representing Fuel Fund at events


Qualifications for the Position

The successful candidate will be resourceful, self-motivated, persistent, flexible and creative. S/he must possess the following qualifications:

·        Bachelor’s degree required

·        At least two years of successful work experience in a high-performance work environment

·        Proven effective planning, communication, attention to detail

·        Ability to communicate effectively with individuals who are in crisis and are feeling stressed and under pressure

·        Proven ability to articulate the important work of the Fuel Fund

·        Strong customer service skills

·        Solid computer proficiency, including Word, Excel, Outlook and The Cloud (Sales Force is a bonus)


·        Ability to work in an environment that encourages consensus building, teamwork, collaborative decision making, and accountability for results

·        Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends

·        Ability to perform office related tasks and use required office equipment, including telephone, cell phone, fax, copy machine, and computer equipment

·        Ability to commute to work on a consistent basis

·        Ability to transport and/or lift 25 pounds
