Position: Summer Camp Director

Location: March – May based in New York City, June-August based on-site

Schedule: 25 hrs./week March 1 – May 30, 40 hrs./week June 1 – August 30

FLSA Status: Part-Time, Contract

Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the Summer Camp Director is a key member of the BCNY team. The Camp Director is responsible for supervising and supporting the Camp Superintendent and all part-time program, administrative, and maintenance staff at our summer camp, located in Harriman State Park. The Camp Director is tasked with creating a comprehensive and responsive program culture and providing services for members in a safe and secure environment. With support from the administrative offices, he/she will manage all aspects of camp operations, including property, program quality, regulatory compliance, employee hiring, payroll, etc. Additionally, the Camp Director will be responsible for curriculum and program implementation and evaluation of the summer program.

 Key Responsibilities

·        Supervise 5-10 part-time staff across program, operations, and maintenance departments

·        Plan instructional and recreational schedule for all grades/sessions in partnership the Chief Program Officer and partnering organizations

·        Ensure the safety of all members and staff at all times

·        Ensure the safety of camp facilities in conjunction with the Camp Superintendent

·        Manage property issues with support from maintenance staff

·        Recruit, hire, and onboard new part-time staff

·        Develop summer camp culture using a range of coaching strategies to improve instructor and staff effectiveness

·        Ensure that staff utilize appropriate behavior interventions and intervene as necessary

·        Manage daily operations and assess program quality through observations

·        Oversee food service program and staff, including maintaining appropriate documentation and compliance

·        Triage emergent facilities, maintenance, and program issues to Camp Superintendent and Chief Program Officer

·        Observe lessons and provide on-going, specific, actionable, positive, and constructive feedback to ensure that staff can translate the feedback into improved instruction

·        Model engaging and appropriate instruction

·        Meet with parents individually and in groups to discuss summer program and camp policies

·        Participate in clubhouse events including staff meetings, special events, and parent meetings, prior to summer camp

·        Plan and deliver high quality professional development for summer camp staff during orientation

·        Manage camp expenses, ensuring quality program implementation within budgetary limits

·        Create a positive work atmosphere that fosters teamwork and a constructive exchange of ideas

·        Maintain appropriate summer camp certification and compliance regulations

·        Communicate and implement emerging BCNY policies

Education and/or Experience

·        Bachelor’s degree in related field required; Master’s degree in Public Administration, Educational Leadership, Youth Development, Social Work, or Management strongly preferred

·        Minimum 3-5 years camp-related work experience

·        Experience successfully supervising staff

·        Experience working with boys and young men in a camp/wilderness setting

·        A sound understanding of the social and cultural issues facing urban youth and families

·        Experience with budgets and financial oversight of programs, physical plant, and property

·        Demonstrated experience working with a broad constituency such as parents, alumni, and community groups and articulating leadership and management philosophy

·        Experience managing partnerships, community, school engagement, and facilities

·        Excellent supervision, management, and leadership skills, including knowledge of mentoring, evaluating, and inspiring staff

·        Strong communication skills

·        Well organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively

·        First Aid and CPR certification desirable

·        ACA/DOH training and certification strongly preferred
