Eviction Diversion Attorney – Pueblo

Under the supervision of the managing attorney, this attorney advises and represents clients at risk of eviction, often in the mediation process.  This position requires demonstrated high quality legal skills with an aggressive, imaginative and energetic approach to meeting the legal needs of the poor. Work will be regularly reviewed to verify general performance and compliance with all regulations and/or guidelines and to stimulate professional growth and development. This position is currently grant-funded for three years, with the possibility of continued funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assume an active caseload, conducting client interviews, investigation and preparation of legal documents and papers as well as negotiations, trial and appellate work in state and federal courts;
  • Provide advice and aggressive representation of clients in accordance with program priorities;
  • Develop relationships with the community served and the leaders of that community;
  • Keep current on general and specialized poverty law developments;
  • Achieve and maintain knowledge of the general areas of poverty law and competence in the particular areas of law ordinarily handled by the local office or unit;
  • Participate in complex and major litigation and other special projects within a local office or program wide, such as litigation involving legal issues affecting numbers of low-income clients, drafting of legislation or regulations, lobbying or administrative rulemaking in accordance with Legal Services Corporation;
  • Participate in office or program wide projects to provide training and/or community education to agencies, advocates, clients, or community groups about legal services, issues, and rights of interest to low-income persons; and
  • Consult and co-counsel with other attorneys and paralegals, where appropriate.


Qualifications

Must be licensed to practice law in Colorado or qualify for admission to the Colorado Bar by Motion. Some experience in legal practice, particularly in poverty or housing law, or related work, is preferred. Sensitivity to the legal needs of poor and/or marginalized people is required. Bilingual fluency and Microsoft Office proficiency preferred.

Benefits

In addition to salary, each employee receives a $350/month stipend which can be allocated for various purposes, including dependents’ health insurance premiums, dependent childcare expenses, and contribution to a 403(b) retirement account. Regarding benefits, CLS pays 100% of each staff member’s health, dental and vision insurance premiums. CLS also pays a percentage of an employee’s spouse and/or dependents’ health, dental and vision insurance premiums, based on a sliding scale depending on salary. Benefits also include twelve paid holidays, as well as annual, health and personal leave.
