Apex for Youth delivers possibilities to underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC. We recruit working professionals to volunteer and become positive role models who inspire youth to expand their horizons and envision what is possible for their lives. Through mentoring, educational, mental health, and social justice programs that serve students from pre-K to 12th grade, Apex staff and volunteers guide and support youth to become confident, be ready for college and give back to the community.

Over the last 10 years, Apex has grown exponentially, and is currently experiencing its most significant growth period to date. During this current fiscal year, we are doubling our team to 60 full and part time staff, investing more resources into our staff’s professional development, growing our programs and partnerships, and serving our highest number of youth at 1500.

Position Summary

Note: We currently have two openings for After School Elementary Site Director - at PS 001 and PS 184 in Manhattan's Chinatown neighborhood.

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of After School Programs, the Site Director is responsible for all aspects of after school programming at our partner school, PS 1 or PS 184, and plays a critical role in Apex’s ability to deliver high-quality after school enrichment programs. The Site Director is the primary contact between Apex, the school community, including school administration and parents, and is responsible for maintaining open and transparent lines of communication and smooth operations of programs. The Site Director provides leadership and direction for all after school staff and works with the After School team to develop age-appropriate curriculum and activities across a range of subject areas. The Site Director is the primary point of contact for the partner school and program partners and meeting DOH and DOE obligations. The Site Director will be responsible for recruiting students, communication with families and representing the program in the context of partnerships and government entities. Additionally, the Site Director will be responsible for the program’s budget and collection of tuition. The Site Director also assumes parallel responsibilities in DYCD funded Summer Programs.

This is an on-site, full-time position at a NYC public school located in Manhattan’s Chinatown, following a Monday through Friday 10:00am-6:30pm schedule inclusive of breaks, combining supervision and management of on-site programs and administration.  

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conduct on-site and hands-on daily supervision (2-6pm) of the After School Program at PS 1 or PS 184
  • Staff recruitment, onboarding, training, evaluation and supervision.
  • Scheduling student activities and instructors and managing daily attendance of students and instructors.
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing, youth-centered and well-supervised After School program; be a liaison with parents, collaborators, school partners, volunteers, and visitors to positively represent the site and program.
  • Assess students’ interest in new after-school programming and success of current programs.
  • Ensure the program is appropriately resourced with necessary equipment, consumables, supplies and snacks.
  • Work with instructors and school partners to identify students’ needs and disciplinary issues and facilitate a positive teaching and learning environment in the Program.
  • Handle any behavioral issues that may arise among program participants and collaborate with school administration and resources to support students and instructors.
  • Produce program reports as needed around student outcomes and other KPIs.
  • Facilitate orientations and trainings for students, parents and instructors.
  • Act as a liaison, and establish and maintain regular communication among all constituencies — school administration, faculty, parents and student participants.
  • Ensure compliance with School Age Child Care (SACC) requirements and Department of Health licensing and other Department of Education regulations.
  • Engage in professional development by participating in periodic lectures and SACC trainings.
  • Develop and maintain systems for tuition collection.
  • Assume responsibility for the program’s budget and approve staff time-cards and submit payroll reports.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Teaching experience with Pre-K to 8th grade students and managing or working with teachers on curriculum design; demonstrated track record of achieving positive student outcomes
  • Bachelor's degree required. Master’s degree in education or a related field and teaching certification are a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills in a professional setting, including attention to detail, multi-tasking and time management
  • Strong communication, oral, written, problem-solving, scheduling and organizational skills
  • Ability to take initiative, maintain tact and diplomacy, use sound judgment, anticipate issues and thoughtfully handle unanticipated events.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision
  • A genuine passion for and belief in Apex’s mission
  • Must have a clear background check and be eligible to work in the United States
  • Chinese Mandarin language skills a plus

Paid time off: In the first year of employment, you will be eligible for roughly a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid federal holidays, org-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July, 5 sick days per year, 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.

Medical and other benefits: Medical, dental and vision insurance with Apex covering the majority of the cost for employees; 401K plan with employer matching; flexible work from home plan; flexible spending account and commuter benefits; paid parental leave; professional development stipend.

Pay range: The salary range is $55,000 - $67,000 per year, depending on experience.
