The Major Gifts Officer is an integral member of the Earth Institute’s development team. The Major Gifts Officer identifies, cultivates and solicits individuals, foundations and corporations with the capacity to make six and seven figure gifts.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer is a senior member of the department. The incumbent is responsible for a prospect portfolio, which s/he determines and cultivates prospects, identifies gift opportunities that match donors' interests, designs and develops solicitation strategies, personally solicits and closes gifts, and continually stewards donors. The incumbent is a collaborative team player who will work closely with the Earth Institute Senior Leadership, Earth Institute faculty, researchers and students, the Earth Institute Development team, and others at Columbia University Office of Alumni and Development (OAD) to identify priorities and execute our fundraising goals. The incumbent must have effective writing and presentation skills and be a persuasive advocate for the Earth Institute and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory priorities.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a self-starter, team oriented, collaborative, able to work independently, highly-organized, a strong writer, and experienced in fundraising. An entrepreneurial fundraiser, committed engaging new donors with the work of the Earth Institute and growing the major gifts program. Needs the capacity to clearly comprehend and communicate the Earth Institute's mission and ongoing initiatives is required. Flexibility and the demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast paced environment, effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously. The Major Gifts Officer will work at both the Morningside and Lamont campuses.

There are TWO available positions for this role. 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct personal visits to cultivate and solicit prospects and close gifts.
  • Build a prospect list of potential major gift donors and engage those donors in the work of the Earth Institute and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
  • Manage prospect relationships to enhance continued and increased support.
  • Maintain records on the Advance database in a timely fashion.
  • Attend events, which facilitate contact with prospects.
  • Prepare written strategies, briefings and correspondence for prospects with a focus on the top tier. Written materials include solicitation materials, proposals, briefings, talking points and executive summaries.
  • Major Gift portfolio includes both New York and regional assignments involving travel
  • Prospect and research to continue to shape the portfolio towards success.
  • Design and develop effective solicitation strategies for securing appropriate gifts from both individuals and appropriate organizations (including corporations and foundations).
  • Partner with and meet administrators, faculty and researchers to understand the Earth Institute’s priorities and carry out strategies. 
  • Plan and execute development events related to the incumbent’s donors.
  • Attend regular EI Development and OAD staff meetings to evaluate progress and prospect assignments. Work closely with OAD staff to coordinate approaches and collaborate on key initiatives.
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required. 
  • A minimum of five years of related experience required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with a fundraising database is essential.
  • This position requires evening and weekend work and travel.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree desirable.
  • Five to seven years in fundraising or related transferable experience preferred.
  • Experience with higher education preferred. 
  • Experience and interest in issues embodied by the Earth Institute's mission a plus.
