JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Senior Director of Nevada Operations (NVO), the Associate Director of Social Enterprise  (“AD”) will serve as a key leader within the organization and be responsible for developing new internal and external partnerships, funding streams, and donors to advance decommodified structures of Social Enterprise as outlined in the Social Enterprise Projects documentation and plan. The Associate Director of Social Enterprise will be a visionary, fluent in co-creating planning documents, facilitating equitable meetings and outreach processes, an inspirational presenter, and a communicator able to document specific timelines, budgets, and progress toward known and imagined (and evolving) goals. The AD will be focused on bringing along internal and external stakeholders, listening to feedback, reporting out publicly and internally, and creating a shared sense of team across our stakeholder groups. Specific projects to support include but are not limited to Off Fossil Fuels (OFF), Gerlach Workforce Development Center (GWDC), the Gerlach Economic Development Corporation, Black Rock Power, Desert Club Hotel, Sustainable Waste Streams. The scope will include three overarching areas of focus, all coalescing around Social Enterprise:  


(1) Social Enterprise Program Management: Serve as the point of contact to oversee all social enterprise program development, create vision documents, staffing plans, budgets, tracking documents, public presentations, donor tracking sheets, support grant-making, support funding opportunities, interact with donors, stakeholders, foundations, staff, and social enterprise supporters. The current Social Enterprise Programs include:

  • 360: Rural maker Space and Village (360)
  • Fly Ranch
  • Gerlach Workforce Development Center & Desert Research Institute (GWDC)
  • Black Rock City Off Fossil Fuels (OFF)
  • Urban Center


(2) Social Enterprise Staff Management: Directly supervise program managers of particular social enterprise programs including the OFF Manager, the Sustainable Waste Streams implementation, and the GWDC manager. 


(3) Senior Management Staff Support: Work to co-create and then directly support the needs of senior level managers pursuing Social Enterprise programs including the Director of Fly Ranch (Fly) and the General Manager of Gerlach Real Estate (360).  


Initially, five positions will directly report to this role: the Solar Program Manager, the Sustainable Waste Streams Manager, the OFF Program Manager, the GWDC Coordinator, and the NVO Producer. This position will cultivate and sustain strong working relationships within the NVO department, work closely with the Philanthropic Engagement, Government Relations, and Communications teams to develop partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, and be an advocate within the organization for the needs of the Gerlach, Empire, Hualapai, Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, and northern Nevada communities as it relates to BMP and NVO activities. 

This is a regular, full-time, eligible for benefits role, with the option to work remotely (strong preference for candidates based near Reno, Nevada, the Bay Area, or New York). This role will spend at least 1/3 of its time in Gerlach, NV with the peak of its on-site focus occurring May - October.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Social Enterprise Program Management (50%)

  • Internal communications: Initiate, drive, and deliver effective projects in partnership with cross-functional teams to ensure all aspects of the programs are communicated, supported, and delivered to the highest standard.
  • Work with NVO Producer to manage social enterprise events happening in Northern Nevada.
  • Strategize and collaborate with Philanthropic Engagement, Government Relations, and Communications teams to develop partnerships with external stakeholders and align sponsorship opportunities with goals. 
  • Budget & spending tracking: create and maintain budgets. Track monies spent, current balance, anticipated costs, etc. Provide monthly reports for internal (accounting, management) and external (donors, grantors, stakeholders) consumption. Proactively discuss any potential adjustments or concerns with the Senior Director of NVO as soon as possible.
  • Grant writing: Work with the internal Philanthropic Engagement team, Government Relations team, and external grant writer support to research, prepare, and submit proposals for funding. Maintain a grants calendar to monitor, supervise, and share progress; ensure requirements and deadlines for grant applications are met.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Own the communication process in sharing out success metrics and key performance indicators; create and share presentations to internal and external audiences; as directed by the Senior Director of NVO, speak at public events, and serve as a subject matter expert. Regularly convene virtual and physical stakeholder meetings with Burning Man community members, staff, and volunteers; regularly engage experts, donors, and government officials; Build a network of an engaged community interested in social enterprise with Burning Man. 
  • Maintain social enterprise docs, use and develop tools to manage and track milestones and timelines. Work with the Sr. Director of NVO to maintain continuity in what and how work is documented; ensure documentation meets outlined standards.
  • Prepare pre-and post-meeting materials, effectively translating objectives, outcomes, and actionable items. Manage project plans and ensure they are integrated and aligned to overall organizational and business strategy.
  • Building new Social Enterprise Programs and funding: Under the direction of the Sr. Director of NVO, collaborate with NVO, Philanthropic Engagement, Government Relations, and Communications teams to further existing and create new social enterprise programs, identify funding opportunities, and ensure narrative consistency for all social enterprise projects including: 360 Maker Village, Fly, GWDC, OFF and the Rural and Urban Centers. 
  • Help manage and guide the process for the Gerlach Economic Development Corporation integration with Burning Man Project. 


Social Enterprise Staff Management - OFF, Waste & GWDC (20%)

Manage the OFF Program Manager and Solar Manager to drive toward taking Black Rock City Off Fossil Fuels (“OFF”)

  • Guide the development of an engaged set of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create a cadence of updates and information sharing.
  • Guide the development of a volunteer cadre.
  • Support and ensure work is aligned with the mission, impact, timelines, budgets, and goals for all key OFF programs.
  • Guide the investigation of the creation of a solar cooperative owned by workers (DPW) and purchasers (art and theme camps) called Black Rock Power.

Manage the Waste Streams staff in NVO to create a year-round sustainable waste streams program in Gerlach

  • Coordinate with the Sustainability Team and Black Rock City teams that are focused on waste streams. Coordinate year-round and Black Rock City based efforts to be aligned and mutually supportive. 
  • Ensure that work aligns with BMP’s Sustainability Roadmap.
  • Assist with communications with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Actively oversee the planning, coordination, and implementation of project plans ensuring timelines and budgets are met and that work is integrated with NVO’s production schedules.

Manage the Gerlach Workforce Development Center Project Coordinator to deliver annual GWDC programs

  • Guide the development of a strategy and budget.
  • Create a cadence of updates and information sharing.
  • Guide the development of a volunteer cadre.
  • Support and ensure work is aligned with the mission, impact, timelines, budgets, and goals.


Senior Management Staff Support - Fly, 360 (20%)

Support the Director of Fly Ranch and the General Manager of Gerlach Real Estate in making sure that their programs related to the social enterprise are integrated into public and internal updates. 

  • Support their development of a strategy and budget for social enterprise related programs.
  • Support their cadence of updates and information sharing and ensure all social enterprise documents match those that go out from each property.
  • Support and ensure work is aligned with the mission, impact, timelines, budgets, and goals.


Other Functions & Responsibilities (10%)

  • Team Management: assist managers under your purview with assembling their teams. Maintain clear communications regarding crew’s work hours and daily and weekly work schedules. Be aware of the atmosphere within the crews; learn, share, and use the proper pathways of communication for escalating personnel issues. Monitor the well-being of staff, and set manageable work expectations.
  • Participate in team meetings, stay up to date with email correspondence and departmental communications, and distribute any relevant information to managers in a timely fashion. Ensure communications are prompt and professional and that any needed discretion is maintained.
  • Provide weekly progress reports to the Sr. Director of NVO. 
  • Be familiar and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 


LEARNING AND TEACHING 

  • Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
  • Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
  • Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.


QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing large and simultaneous projects, defining and implementing goals while maintaining scope, budget, and schedule. 
  • Strong client relationship management skills; experience in Social Enterprise of any sort (including government, non-profit, impact, etc), sustainability, and start-ups a plus.
  • Results-driven, execution-focused, seasoned professional who can work independently and with a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to create and manage relationships and deliver clear, concise information to partners, clients, and team.
  • Reacts positively to change, cooperating readily with revised methods and priorities.
  • Working knowledge of Google products (Sheets, Drive, Docs); ability to develop and improve Google and Excel sheets. 
  • A motivated and meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail.
  • Time management skills: effectively manages own time, the time of individual team members, and the efforts of the team as a whole. Must possess a strong ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate various activities to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively solve problems, make decisions, and take action, exercising solid independent judgment. 
  • Able to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Honest and ethical with a dedication to the Burning Man principles and behavioral standards.

PREFERRED

  • Experience in social enterprise of any sort (including government, non-profit, impact, etc), sustainability, and/or start-ups a plus.
  • Experience in Communications, Presentation, Group Facilitation, and/or Project Management preferred. 
  • Background in inspirational leadership, communications, visioning, and stakeholder management.
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.

On-playa: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation.  Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
