Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc., is a non-profit law firm which provides community education and legal representation to Southern California’s most vulnerable immigrant communities. Esperanza specifically provides assistance to immigrants who are in detention and/or removal proceedings, and focuses on complex immigration cases which may involve unaccompanied minors, mental health issues, and criminal or gang history. Esperanza has provided legal services to immigrants and their families in Los Angeles for over 15 years. Responsibilities: 

  • Direct and supervise assigned program staff and volunteers.
  • Responsible for the fiscal and human resources implementation with the region.
  • Maintain liaison with key governmental, Agency and community leaders in the region.
  • Plan, organize and conduct approved programs in accordance with official directives and applicable contract provisions and government regulations.
  • Supervises program staff responsible for implementation of programs and maintenance of program records in accordance with approved standards and practices.
  • Implement program policies and procedures to ensure contractual and legal compliance as well as program performance standards.
  • Participates in fundraising activities and serves as community liaison.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other agencies and community groups.
  • Promotes continuous quality improvement and service delivery that is aligned with the Agency’s mission. 

Qualifications:

  •  Master’s degree required; Juris Doctorate degree preferred;
  • Active, California State Bar License (preferred), or license from another jurisdiction;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the practice of law, preferably in immigration and/or public interest law;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively work, communicate and build rapport with diverse groups of individuals, including representatives of government, foundations, English/ Spanish media, and other grassroots organizations.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Experience developing alignment and efficiency across diverse legal service programs
  •  Interest in working with low-income immigrant and refugee community and experience working with persons of diverse economic, cultural and ethnic background to relate to those suffering from mental illness.
  • Experience achieving financial, operational, and programmatic results in a dynamic, evolving environment where external forces are uncertain.
  •  Ability to work with limited resources to develop and implement innovative models of service.
  • Experience supervising lawyers and/or law students preferred;
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work under pressure with limited supervision required;
  •  Passion for social justice for immigrants required.
