The Promise of Justice Initiative (PJI) is a New Orleans based nonprofit that works to create positive change for people in the criminal justice at the intersection of direct services, impact litigation, and community engagement. We believe in a world where our justice system values each person; a world where the system supports rehabilitation, and a world where we approach justice with a lens of healing and restoration for those who are harmed. This world will be safer and more secure for all people.

The Director of Strategic Criminal Litigation will expand our strategic criminal litigation work which consists of representing people throughout the state in various postures where we see an opportunity to advance legal doctrine in positive ways. This role also involves participating in a collaborative leadership team on issues of litigation, policy, organizing and public education. This position also involves supervision.

This position requires both a deep commitment to the people we serve as well as to improving the criminal justice system as a whole. You must be creative. You must be comfortable in uncomfortable situations, and have the capacity to perform at a high level under stress.

The Director of Strategic Criminal Litigation will:

• Develop a vision for the department including working on a multi-year plan, developing and evaluating existing case criteria

• Supervise and grow a team of attorneys, investigators, fellows, and paralegals to successfully litigate cases;

• Maintain high-standards for diligent client communication;

• Work in a team environment with shared goals and values;

• Communicate with partner organizations and pro bono counsel;

• Respond to requests for legal assistance;

• Participate in leadership activities including policy support and development;

• Assist in fundraising as needed;

• Other duties and responsibilities as required to meet PJI’s needs.

Required Qualifications

- Law degree and admission to the Louisiana State Bar

- At least 6-8 years practicing criminal law in Louisiana

- Demonstrated commitment to improving the criminal legal system

Experience successfully working with people impacted by the criminal court system

- Experience successfully supervising people from a variety of backgrounds and experience

- Strong written and verbal communication skills

- Strong attention to detail

- Strong client advocacy

- Willingness to work outside of work hours when necessary

- Willingness to travel when necessary

- Driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience working collaboratively with organizers, civil attorneys, and community member

- Experience developing legal projects in a non-profit setting

- Familiarity with policy work in Louisiana

- Familiarity with the work of CAP and PJI

Salary will be commensurate with experience from $80,000- 95,000 with generous benefits.
