About HOPE Collaborative, a project of the Tides Center

  • Mission and vision. HOPE (Health for Oakland’s People and Environment) Collaborative’s mission is to advance racial, economic, and health equity in Oakland through community-driven food and neighborhood initiatives. We envision a vibrant Oakland where historically marginalized communities shape their neighborhoods’ future, have equitable opportunities for healthy food and safe community spaces, and build community wealth.
  • How we do our work. A diverse Steering Committee sets direction and makes major decisions regarding budget and strategy. Steering Committee members include public agency representatives, nonprofit professionals, community members, and young people. A staff of 4.5 FTE, including the Director, carry out the work. The Director is responsible for day-to-day decisions, supervises 4 staff members, and is directly supported by 0.5 FTE staff. The organizational budget is between $500,000 - $1,000,000. The Tides Center is HOPE Collaborative’s fiscal sponsor. HOPE Collaborative is committed to centering community members in all our decisions.


About the position: The Director leads the day-to-day work of HOPE Collaborative and oversees strategic vision and facilitative leadership; finance, operations, and administration; fundraising; staff management and development; program delivery and evaluation; and communications. Priority and first consideration given to local candidates, especially those with experience working in and with Black/African American communities, communities of color, and low-income communities.


The ideal Director for HOPE Collaborative at this time enjoys and has proven experience with:

  • Organizational management and growth. Thorough understanding of finance, systems, communications, and HR. Enjoys building and upgrading internal systems, especially in operations and finance.
  • Financial management and fund development. Thorough understanding of finance and financial systems, including how to create and manage a budget, read an income statement, and oversee AP/AR. Ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget. Ability to research and evaluate grant opportunities for organizational fit, and write compelling grant proposals.
  • People management. Ability to coach and develop staff with diverse levels of experience; create a unified team that is used to working in siloes; hold staff accountable; and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed.
  • Oakland dynamics. Deep understanding and ability to navigate political and social dynamics in Oakland, including the tension between place-based community development, gentrification and displacement. Experience building relationships and working with community based organizations in Oakland.
  • HOPE Collaborative issue areas. Demonstrated community engagement, food systems, built environment, school food, and/or urban planning expertise with the ability to serve as a strategic resource to others engaging in this work.


The ideal Director will have the following qualities:

  • Deep commitment to and experience working towards racial, economic, and health equity.
  • High emotional intelligence. Ability to work with people and groups from different ages, races, socioeconomic backgrounds, power, privilege, and perspectives.
  • Clear, effective, and thoughtful communication. Polished written, verbal, and visual communications skills. Takes time to collect thoughts and make things clear to others. Experience serving as an external spokesperson.
  • Strategic thinker. Ability to say no to opportunities, funders, and partners in order to keep the organization focused on its mission and deliverables. Ability to connect the dots between seemingly disparate priorities and integrate into unified program delivery. Ability to evaluate program and policy opportunities for strategic impact and organizational fit.
  • Action oriented. Able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available. Not afraid to take charge of a situation. Can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary.


Bonus qualities and experience:

  • Connection to local networks of public and private sector partners, funders, and non-profit partners.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Google Calendar, etc.) and other online sharing platforms.

Responsibilities

Strategic vision and facilitative leadership (20%)

  • Collaborate with the Steering Committee, staff, and community members to update and implement the strategic plan (known as the Community Action Plan) while ensuring that the budget, staff, and priorities are aligned with HOPE Collaborative’s core mission. Make recommendations about strategic direction to the Steering Committee.
  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Steering Committee and ensure open communication about financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals.
  • Manage Steering Committee members, coordinate monthly meetings, prepare and deliver trainings as needed (e.g. budget 101 training), prepare documents and clear explanation of each (e.g. monthly budget reports).
  • Recruit, orient, train, and hold accountable Steering Committee members.


Finance, operations, and administration (20%)

  • Develop, upgrade, and implement more sophisticated policies and procedures for both finance and general operations, including: expense tracking and coding, re-forecasting based on monthly budget reports, internal knowledge sharing and collaboration, and joint staff work-planning.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the annual budget process.
  • Partner with Tides Center (HOPE Collaborative’s fiscal sponsor) in order to ensure smooth financial, budgeting, and administrative processes, including HR, payroll, AP/AR, and benefits.


Fundraising (20%)

  • Develop and execute a fund development plan that will support substantial growth over the next 2-5 years.
  • Execute annual fundraising plan. Identify funding opportunities; write, submit, and track proposals; and coordinate reporting to funders.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major funders.
  • Ensure organizational accountability to grants and contracts, including reporting, monitoring work progress, and managing spending within grant budgets.


Staff management and development (20%)

  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain HOPE Collaborative’s team of 4.5 FTE staff members, who range from senior-level program managers to entry-level organizers.
  • Develop and implement a system to evaluate the skill, experience, and professional development needs of all staff. Implement a professional development plan to address employee experience and skill gaps.
  • Monitor staff performance, and conduct annual performance reviews.
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee training and orientation of all staff members.


Program delivery and evaluation (10%)

  • Facilitate collaboration and coordination among program managers.
  • Hold program managers accountable to funded deliverables and organizational goals.
  • Ensure regular participatory evaluation processes are integrated into all projects and programs from the beginning.
  • Ensure results and feedback from evaluations are regularly incorporated into adjusting program design and implementation.


Communication (10%)

  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications, including website, newsletter and social media. 
  • Build and maintain effective and strategic stakeholder relationships with public agencies, community based organizations, funders, and community members.
  • Publicly represent and advance HOPE as a local and national leader in food justice and equitable community development.


Work environment: While this is an office position, applicants should be aware that travel to other locations in and around Oakland will be frequent (approximately 20%) and required for meetings, outreach, events, and other community activities. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends. There will be out of area travel not to exceed 15%. A personal vehicle or public transportation may be utilized.


Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to attend meetings inside and outside of the office, operate a computer for up to 8 hours per day, and communicate by phone and email.
