Part-time Victim Advocate/Case Worker

Position Summary

The Victim Advocate/Case Manager will provide referrals, personal advocacy, and support for our clients who are LGBTQIA+ victims of crime and their loved ones to navigate housing, shelter, food, medical, legal and social needs to relieve stress of crisis and/or trauma to empower them to build a stable foundation on which to recover. They will identify and connect clients with resources to meet their immediate needs, accompany clients to legal proceedings and other appointments, as needed, assist clients in applying for available financial assistance, and work with clients to develop plans for meeting ongoing needs. The Victim Advocate/Case Manager must be a welcoming and helpful presence to those visiting the PCSO Pride Center and uphold the PCSO’s mission, vision, and shared values in their interactions with clients, visitors, partners, and the larger community.

Reports to:  Executive Director

Position type: Temporary ( grant funded position through 9/30/2022, but will be seeking funding to make the position permanent), Part-time, Non-exempt (hourly) 

Schedule: The average work week will be 20 hours per week. Some evening and weekend hours will be required. A regular schedule will be determined when the position is filled based on preference of employee and determination of best schedule for clients. 

Wage: $15 per hour. Eligible for paid holidays and sick days, and vacation days after 90 days on a prorated basis for part-time staff.

Location : The Victim Advocate/Case Manager will typically work at the PCSO Pride Center at 389 Waller Avenue in Lexington, KY. However, work may be conducted in other locations as required by programming, special events, networking, and community engagement. Some regional, statewide, and national travel may be required.

Through our Pride Center, we provide a community focal point that provides access to information, support, services, resources, safe spaces, networking, and community for the LGBTQIA+ community. With the Lexington Pride Festival, we produce a public event that provides celebration, connection, empowerment, and education, for LGBTQIA+ people, their families  and allies, and the broader community.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide advocacy services and support to survivors of crime
  • Assess immediate crisis needs of clients and address appropriately.
  • Provide assistance to victims in applying for crime victim compensation benefits.
  • Manage incoming calls and walk-ins and complete necessary documentation.
  • Complete and maintain client records that document services provided. 
  • As applicable, educate clients about dynamics of intimate partner violence and sexual assault and options/resources available. 
  • Work with clients to develop and maintain relevant and meaningful case plans. 
  • Provide concrete case management and access to in-house and external resources.
  • Meet regularly with clients to support case plan accomplishment. 
  • Refer clients to other agencies and resources and advocate directly with other agencies as needed to help clients access necessary services. 
  • Maintain service partnerships with referral agencies.
  • Assist clients in identifying and fulfilling needs. 
  • Participate in staff meetings, case conferences and other meetings as needed. 
  • Facilitate support groups as needed. 
  • Complete a minimum of 12 hours of victim assistance training during the year (to be coordinated and paid for by employer).


Position Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in human services or a related field OR equivalent work or volunteer experience and training. 
  • Experience in a similar role (this includes relevant paid and unpaid/volunteer/community work) 
  • Must work well with persons of diverse genders, sexualities, races, ethnicities; those with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities;  and those with diverse cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. 
  • A commitment to and passion for working with the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with issues related to  relationship violence, child abuse, stalking, and sexual abuse and assault preferred. 
  • Knowledge of counseling and advocacy techniques for people who have been victims of domestic violence, including crisis intervention and case management skills beneficial. 
  • Previous employment or volunteer work in human services, community agencies, or other related nonprofit or social change organizations is a plus. 
  • Good oral and written communication and computer skills are required. 
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) speaker preferred. 
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Willingness to work within anti-racist and anti-oppressive frameworks and actively engage in ongoing learning about these frameworks.
