Note: This is an entry-level supervisory position for a non-profit organization.

The Shelter Supervisor oversees the operations of a low-demand shelter and program for homeless persons to ensure that the needs of guests are met in a coordinated and consistent manner. The Shelter Supervisor manages staff and is responsible for overseeing the shelter in cooperation with other program management.

Reports to: Director of Shelter

General Responsibilities

The Shelter Supervisor will be responsible to:

  • Conduct guest orientation and complete necessary paperwork (including brief needs assessment) for new intakes; facilitate weekly guest floor meetings and prepare reports to Director of Shelter; handle guest grievances in a timely manner with the Director of Shelter.
  • Supervise shelter staff, including orientation, planning, organizing and directing work; conduct on-going one-on-one supervision; interview applicants in order to select the best qualified candidates; conduct ongoing staff training, including performance management and documentation; complete and maintain, staff schedule for the program and arrange for substitute coverage; conduct monthly staff meetings and prepare reports to Director of Shelter Services.
  • Oversee general operations of the facility and report any problems/concerns; oversee the safety of guests, volunteers, and visitors; oversee the monitoring of medications and the accuracy of medication logs; report maintenance needs and repair requests; oversee the formal acceptance of requests issued to guests to admitted to the shelter in Homeless Management Information System (HMIS); input incident reports.

Skill/Educational Requirements

• Four (4) year degree, preferred or equivalent combination of education, training and experience in Human Services, Counseling, Social Work, or related field, required.

• 1-2 years supervisory experience.

• Positive, strong leadership that can motivate, guide, and direct a team.

• Strong understanding of homelessness, substance abuse and mental health issues.

• Excellent interpersonal and organizational communication skills and computer literacy with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook.

Physical Requirements

·        The ability to escort disruptive guests out of the building.

·        Requires repetitive movement of hands and fingers for typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching and lifting up to 35 lbs. Ability to reach with hands and arms and perform audio and visual assessments, as required.

·        Ability to work 4:00PM-12:00AM (including a weekend day).
