The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking an Assistant Director, Foundation Relations at The George Washington University (GW). DARis responsible for leading the university’s alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWUs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

The Assistant Director, Foundation Relations, reporting to the Director of Foundation Relations, will help identify and secure philanthropic support from foundations for various GW priorities and programs. The Assistant Director will establish effective working relationships with school/unit fundraisers, department heads, faculty and administrative staff of the university to accomplish foundation fundraising goals.


  • Identifies foundation fundraising opportunities and meets with faculty, program managers, and DAR staff to develop appropriate strategies for outreach.
  • Assists in the creation of letters of support, concept papers, proposals and reports for funders, on behalf of individual schools and faculty. This includes a thorough understanding of GW systems for proposal submission and grants management, including assistance with routing proposals through the Office of Sponsored Projects.
  • Supports visits by university leadership during their travel by identifying foundations to secure meetings, and preparing internal briefing materials.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with school and unit fundraisers, department heads, faculty and administrative staff of the university allowing for efficient work coordination and development.
  • Facilitates gift processing between the Office of Sponsored Projects and DAR.
  • Maintains proper documentation of fundraising activities, including visits, solicitations, correspondence, strategies and proposals.
  • Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate will have fundraising experience, ideally with the majority of the experience working with foundations. Desirable experience includes work in a higher education development office, and/or the development office of a medium to large nonprofit organization.
  • Exceptional verbal and written skills to effectively communicate with donors, institutional leaders, faculty, and staff. Proven experience in soliciting five- and six-figure grants and gifts highly desired. Candidates should be detail-oriented, possess strong organizational skills, and have the ability to work on multiple projects with different colleagues simultaneously. Candidates also should demonstrate a strong commitment to quality of service, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
