Description

The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is searching for a Grants & Development Manager who will help guide the operations of the organization's grants and development functions which include: seeking and securing public and private grant funding for existing programs and new initiatives; securing and retaining external funding support for the SfN annual meeting from foundations, corporations, and individuals; building, growing, and maintaining a robust, multi-tiered individual giving program; ensuring the proper management and administration of existing grants and support agreements; and ensuring timely and proper cultivation, acknowledgement, and stewardship of individual and institutional supporters. The Manager will be responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and maintenance of operational systems, policies, and procedures for the department. This is an ideal position for a process driven candidate with strong project management skills and a high attention to detail.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Research and Cultivation of Organizational Support

  • Monitor federal, state and local web sites and other sources for grant opportunity announcements and inform program staff of relevant announcements.
  • Identify and research availability of public and private grant funds.
  • Represent the Society to prospective grantmakers and donors when requested.
  • Develop letters, agreements, and other materials in collaboration with the department Director, as needed for Executive Director and other stakeholders who present SfN programs.
  • Design and coordinate follow-up with prospective funders and supporters alongside department Director after initial contact has been made by senior staff, Council members, etc.
  • Help create, update and disseminate the various types of communications regarding development initiatives including brochures, website content, solicitation letters, house ads, newsletter/web articles, videos, correspondence, etc.
  • Ensure donor stewardship is maintained by sending acknowledgment letters, press releases, photos, personal meetings, annual reports and other correspondence.

Proposal Development

  • Support the Director's efforts in coordinating grant proposals and support requests, including planning, writing, document gathering, internal and external communications, and final submissions.
  • In cases where external consulting services are used to assist in proposal development, the Manager may assist the Director in identifying, procuring, and managing these services.
  • Help to ensure all grant applications are responsive to the solicitation or requirements and that both the content and format are compliant with the funders' requirements; ensure that the correct forms are utilized for all necessary attachments.
  • Work in tandem with department Director, finance staff, and relevant program staff to help prepare project level budgets and justifications for private and public grant requests.
  • Help to ensure that grant-funded programs are responsive to the overall mission of SfN and do not conflict or compete with member activities.
  • Follow-up on submitted applications and proposals, as well as with potential funders.

Individual Giving Programs

  • Support efforts of department Director to manage and grow the multi-tiered individual giving program (annual fund, major gifts and planned gifts).
  • Help develop and disseminate multimedia marketing and promotional materials (website, print ads, electronic mail, and direct mail) to solicit individual gifts.
  • Maintain systems for timely and appropriate acknowledgments of individual donors.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain appropriate individual giving stewardship materials, activities, and programs.
  • Monitor individual donations and ensure that donations are properly accounted for and used for their intended purpose.

Reporting Requirements

  • Communicate with program officers and funder points of contact in conjunction with internal Project Director/Program Staff, as appropriate.
  • Help coordinate with relevant departments to ensure timely submissions and ensure all aspects of interim and final reports to funding agencies, entities and sponsors, as required by the funding agreements, are complete.
  • Ensure all contracts and grant files are updated, accurate and accessible to program staff electronically.
  • Maintain systems to ensure multi-year funding and sponsorship agreements are up-to-date; coordinate with Finance to ensure applicable payments are up to date.
  • Maintain systems, databases and reports to track and cultivate various funders and donors.

General Duties

  • Consistently manifest a customer service orientation in all communications and activities with SfN staff; highly responsive to stakeholders and funders.
  • Solicit and integrate input and feedback from supervisor and colleagues appropriately.
  • Serve as an engaged and involved team member, supportive of the varied experiences and perspectives of internal and external colleagues.
  • Work within the team and collaborate with other teams to ensure that decisions are made to further the organization's goals.
  • Supervise and coordinate tasks and activities for Grants & Development Associate and/or temporary staff and ensure tasks are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Perform other assigned tasks not specifically listed herein but which may be required to support the revenue generating efforts of the Operations and Development Department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Supervisory Experience:

  • Supervises one staff member (Grants & Development Associate).
  • Delegates effectively, communicates expectations clearly, and provides professional development opportunities.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of related professional experience required, preferably in a nonprofit organization setting seeking public and private sources of funding.
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of supervisory or team lead experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience with researching, writing, and/or managing federal and/or foundation grant proposals.
  • Knowledge of U.S. government application processes and award management.
  • Proficiency in MS Office skills, database administration, internet research skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of federal government funding streams and cycles is a plus and experience with proposal writing and securing private funding is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of fundraising methods and approaches is also required.
  • Experience managing budgets and goals is also highly desirable

  • Ability to multi-task and set priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs.
  • Strong written, research, oral, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience using fundraising databases and search tools.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated.
  • Grant, fundraising, and/or project management certifications (e.g., CFRE, GPC, PMP, or equivalent) and/or completion of relevant training courses preferred.
