Legal Services NYC fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low income New Yorkers. For 50 years, we have challenged systemic injustices that trap people in poverty and provided legal services that help our clients meet basic needs for housing, income and economic security, family and immigration stability, education, and health care. LSNYC is the largest civil legal services provider in the country; our staff of almost 600 people in neighborhood-based offices and outreach sites across all five boroughs helps hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers annually. We partner with scores of community-based and client-run organizations, elected officials, public agencies, pro bono lawyers, and the courts to maximize our effectiveness. Our work fights discrimination and helps to achieve equity for all low-income New Yorkers.


The Opportunity

LSNYC seeks a Directing Attorney to lead and support our vibrant immigration practice. The practice includes 5 immigration supervisors and 30 attorneys and paralegals located in offices in all 5 boroughs, and handles a wide range of immigration work including: complex litigation, removal defense, asylum, U- and T-visas, relief under VAWA, family petitions, consular processing, citizenship, and naturalization, and appellate advocacy.


The Directing Attorney’s duties include:

·      Serving as LSNYC’s primary spokesperson on immigration issues

·      Promoting a cohesive and strategic citywide practice, in collaboration with our borough-based immigration supervisors and units

·      Providing expertise to LSNYC advocates on immigration law and practice

·      Developing and leading complex litigation and advocacy

·      Leading the annual setting of LSNYC’s strategic immigration litigation and advocacy goals

·      Coordinating immigration training for LSNYC’s staff and colleagues in the public interest bar

·      Managing LSNYC’s citywide immigration contracts, in conjunction with LSNYC’s borough-based immigration supervisors and LSNYC’s grants and contracts team

·      Working closely with LSNYC’s Pro Bono Director, Pro Bono Immigration Attorney, and borough-based immigration units to support LSNYC’s Pro Bono Immigration projects

·      Participating in LSNYC’s Language Access Project to continue LSNYC’s commitment to language access for LEP clients and communities


We seek a candidate with the following:

-       At least 7 years of experience in immigration law practice, including expertise in case types often handled by LSNYC. Experience with complex removal defense, BIA appeals, AAO appeals, and federal litigation preferred.

-       Demonstrated ability to lead complex litigation and advocacy efforts

-       Excellent writing, communication, time management and oral presentation skills

-       Demonstrated skills in collaboration and consensus building

-       Fluency in a language spoken by NYC’s client communities preferred

-       Experience in partnering with community-based advocates and organizations

-       Experience in partnering with funders and managing funding contracts

-       Dedication to promoting a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace

-       Demonstrated commitment to racial, social and economic justice
