Job Description

At 80,000 hours our aim is to help as many people as possible lead high-impact careers, based on the intellectual project and movement known as 'Effective Altruism' which has grown out of the philosophy department at the University of Oxford. We do this by providing career advice for talented young people who want to have a social impact, as well as conducting original research.


80,000 Hours is a small independent team part of the Centre for Effective Altruism, and accordingly requires candidates who have flexible skills. 80,000 Hours is looking for an experienced researcher to join its research team.


Responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the research direction for the organization: planning, organization and allocation of resources
  • Formulating and directing implementation of 80000 Hours policies relating to research
  • Conceptual and empirical research and analysis into which careers are most impactful as well as how to make different trade-offs within a career in order to do the most good
  • Contributing research towards the 80,000 Hours podcast
  • Writing original research content for the website, as well as editing and proofreading content.
  • Presenting research findings to a diverse range of audiences and stakeholders.


We are seeking people with the following skills and experience:


Essential skills and experience:

  • A minimum of five years research experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of different philosophical and ethical positions, as evidenced by a Master’s degree or higher in Philosophy from a highly regarded academic establishment.
  • Demonstrated ability to do high-level conceptual analysis, and generate ideas for new research projects, as evidenced by an extensive portfolio of original research.
  • Ability to conduct in-depth investigations, as evidenced by published papers or a research thesis
  • In-depth experience in applied ethics and the field of global priorities research
  • Demonstrated ability to give compelling presentations to large audiences.
  • A high degree of conscientiousness, self-motivation, and discipline, as well as excellent attention to detail
  • English fluency and the ability to write clear and compelling prose, as demonstrated by a portfolio.
  • Strong knowledge of and commitment to the ideals, philosophical arguments and values of effective altruism.
  • Ability to condense complex research into a simple and readable form
  • Experience with the professional landscape of the effective altruism community
  • Familiarity with the organisations that make up the effective altruism community


Desirable research skills and experience:

  • Experience writing content for a research blog.
  • Experience editing research content.
  • Able to quickly master complex, abstract ideas, and solve problems.
  • Comfortable working in a team and quick to get on with new people.
  • A strong desire for personal development.
  • Experience negotiating competing interests and managing disagreements


Salary and location

This position will be based out of our London, UK office, although travel to conferences in the US will be required. Our salary range is £45,000 - £65,000.
