Owned by the City of New York, the High Line is programmed, maintained, and operated by Friends of the High Line, in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. We raise nearly 100% of the High Line’s annual budget.

Through excellence in operations, stewardship, innovative programming, and world-class design, we seek to engage the vibrant and diverse community on and around the High Line, and to raise the essential private funding to help complete the High Line’s construction and create an endowment for its future operations.

The controller is a critical member of FHL’s Administration and Finance team. The controller reports to the senior director of finance and oversees the staff accountant and finance assistant.

Job description

The controller is responsible for managing all accounting and internal reporting of FHL’s financial activities, and ensuring the organization’s accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This is a full-time exempt position.

Primary responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate books and financial reporting, in a precise and timely manner
  • Collaborate with department heads to ensure budget versus actual and reforecast reports are accurate
  • Monitor expenditures and manage cash flow
  • Work to strengthen the organization’s internal controls and streamline fiscal processes to protect FHL’s financial and physical assets and prudently manage its resources
  • Assist with the preparation of financial schedules for senior leadership, Audit & Finance Committee, and the Board
  • Coordinate annual audit, including preparing annual audit schedules for the external auditors and preparing annual audited financial statements
  • Prepare IRS Form 990, CHAR 500 and other required government filings, in collaboration with third-party accounting firm
  • Review bank, credit card, and investment account reconciliations
  • Responsible for determining credit card usage and employee reimbursements are within compliance of internal policies
  • Review the New York State sales tax and organization’s lobbying filings
  • Work with the senior director of finance in the development, coordination, and preparation of FHL’s annual and capital budgeting process and timetable
  • Oversee the processing and payment of approved invoices, ensuring that all contracts are properly executed as part of the process
  • Maintain fiscal controls over the receipt, deposit, and disbursement of funds
  • Assist with financial requirements for foundation, government, and other grants
  • Coordinate with the Retail and Food & Beverage Departments to track sales, maintain accurate inventory records, and determine sub-licensee payments
  • Attend and participate at Audit & Finance and Investment Committee meetings, as needed
  • Work with NYC Parks & Recreation Department on required invoices, payments and financial reports
  • Special finance-related projects, as required

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • CPA license
  • 5+ years of experience, in a non-profit organization or an audit firm specializing in the non-profit sector
  • Experience working in a supervisory capacity
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Flexibility and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven professional experienced in finance, accounting, contracts, budgeting and cost control principles, including GAAP and automated financial reporting systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, highly detail-oriented, organized, and able to handle multiple projects at once
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in Blackbaud’s Financial Edge or a similar accounting software
  • Experience in forecasting and budgeting

  • Ability to see the big picture while focusing on the process and procedures necessary to produce deliverables
  • Ability to establish and meet deadlines
