Our Legal Advocacy Department provides free, comprehensive civil legal services to thousands of low-income individuals and families on the East Side of Manhattan –reaching those in our community who lack the means to secure their civil legal rights. Our twenty-three staff members assist over 5000 low-income individuals and families with diverse civil legal issues such as housing, health care, government benefits, and advance directives. We operate through a multidisciplinary holistic approach to legal representation, such that our clients receive assistance not only with their civil legal needs, but also have access to our social workers, psychiatrists, case managers, ESOL classes and more within our organization. This synergy of legal advocacy and social services creates a powerful tool to achieve social and legal justice for those in need.

The Legal Advocacy Department Intake and Administrative Advocate will be an integral part of our civil legal services program and will:


  • Conduct intake and interviews with potential clients in a variety of settings, including Housing Court, clinics and telephone hotlines;
  • Obtain information necessary to determine program eligibility and collect documents vital to our provision of free legal assistance;
  • Prepare written correspondence to clients, community members, pro bono partners and other stakeholders;
  • Work collaboratively with attorneys as needed to provide legal services to clients in housing, health care and other civil matters;
  • Conduct community outreach about our program and services available;
  • Provide referrals and linkages to clients;
  • Complete data entry and data management related to client matters, outreach and grant-related information; and
  • Provide general office and administrative support to the Department.


A successful candidate will demonstrate: strong attention to detail and organization; a high level of computer proficiency (with the ability to learn new technologies and databases); the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; excellent communication skills; the ability to respond sensitively to the needs of our clients; and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team to complete complex projects in a fast-paced environment. BA or BS degree is required. Spanish proficiency is a plus. Excellent benefits package is available.
