United Parents and Students (UPAS) is a non-profit organization comprised of parents, students, and community members dedicated to addressing the factors outside school boundaries that not only pose barriers to learning, but also inhibit local quality of life. UPAS is an affiliate of Green Dot Public Schools National.



The Civic Engagement Associate’s role is to engage and organize families around issues of concern in their community and city that pose barriers to learning and local quality of life. This entails relationship building with parents, training families in the skills of community organizing, and supporting them in building a base to meet with public officials. Additionally, the Civic Engagement Associate leads voter registration efforts at 2-4 school sites. The Associate will be self-motivated, take initiative, a team player, and detail-oriented. This is a grant-funded position.


> Support efforts to engage and organize parents to build an organization that can advocate for students and families

> Hold 1-on-1 meetings, house meetings, and leadership team meetings with parents, in order to build relationships, identify issues of concern, and support families in learning the skill of community organizing

> Support families in holding local and regional actions, in which they meet with public officials around issues of concern in their community

> Serve as the school-site expert on civic engagement and lead on-campus non-partisan voter registration work

> Identify, develop and support parent volunteers for non-partisan voter registration and GOTV campaigns by providing training on voter registration and phone banking

> Staff non-partisan campaign events including tabling and phone banking

> Develop and implement communications plan across multiple media platforms including, but not limited to: email newsletters, printed flyers, mailings, and presentations

> Disseminate communications across various platforms to target outreach lists including mass emails, flyers, and mailers

> Generate reports from web-based data platform to identify target outreach recipients; evaluate event attendance; measure efficacy of communication initiatives; and provide progress to goal updates for staff and manager

> Track, enter, and maintain data on voter registration and participation in events and progress in data platform

> Manage voter registration life cycle from form collection through submission to the county and request voter registration cards on an as-needed basis

> Assist with the connection of schools and families to local resources

This job is a combined home office and school site position, with the majority of time at school sites. The position utilizes typical office equipment (computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.). Normal business hours are 8:30am – 5:00pm, Monday-Friday (although these hours may vary and do require evening and weekend work based on organizational needs). Travel is often required between school sites in Los Angeles County and the Home Office.
