Horizons goal is to reverse the trend of summer learning loss that adversely impacts the long-term success of students from underserved communities. Horizons at Carolina Day, an affiliate of the nationally renowned Horizons program, is a public-private partnership that provides academic, cultural, and recreational summer programming designed to support economically disadvantaged students in realizing their full potential.

The heart of Horizons is a six week equity-centered summer academic program that supports students in reading, writing, math, and science, paired with swimming lessons, field trips, sports, and enrichment activities in the performing and visual arts. The program also includes a year-round component featuring online tutoring, Saturday events, regular visits to schools, and communication with students’ schools and teachers.

 General Description

The Executive Director of Horizons at Carolina Day School is the Chief Operating Officer and reports directly to the Board of Directors. This is a full-time professional opportunity with a growing program. The Executive Director provides professional guidance and leadership for Horizons. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all Horizons activities and operations, including hiring and training program staff. The Executive Director is responsible for developing and implementing sound fundraising strategies to meet annual fundraising goals and broaden the organization’s base of support. Finally, the Executive Director is responsible for the quality of summer and school year academic programs for all students.


Major Responsibilities:

Program Management

●     Responsible for overseeing the development and growth of all programs

●     Hires, supervises and evaluates staff and teachers

●     Maintains a climate that attracts, keeps and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people

●     Oversees the process for recruiting, scheduling and training volunteers

●     Maintains contact and communication with students and their families throughout the year.

●     Meets with and Communicates with host school personnel on a regular schedule

●     Ensures compliance with all state licensing requirements

●     Completes all required state reports and all reports due to Horizons National

●     Oversees the year round student tutoring program

●     Coordinates with teachers special/seasonal event for the students

Public/Community Relations

●     Promotes community awareness of Horizons at Carolina Day School by serving as spokesperson

●     Coordinates media relations with PR director at host school

●     Coordinates visitor days during the Summer Program

●     Works with host school PR Director and Board representative in preparation of brochures, reports, newsletters and other marketing materials to showcase the program

●     Develops a parent council for student parents

●     Establishes sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations that can support Horizons program and participants

Development

●     Develops yearly fundraising strategy and timeline

●     Responsible for proposals and grant writing and submission to appropriate sources

●     Identifies and approaches funding individuals and corporations with Board Members and advocates of the organization

●     Prepares and submits monthly reports and updates on fundraising results

●     Researches and identifies new sources of funding from all possible areas

Board Support

●     Attends all monthly meetings of the Board of Directors

●     Serves in ex-officio (non-voting) capacity on committees and responsible for full understanding of committee functions

●     Works with the Board of Directors in developing/expanding new programs

●     Serves as liaison between staff and Board of Directors

●     Supports Board of Directors fundraising events

●     Informs Board President regarding all significant Horizons activities

●     Works with and updates the Long Range Plan

●     Submits appropriate reports at monthly Board meetings

 Budget

●     Works with Horizons Treasurer and members of the Budget/Finance Committee to develop annual budget and to manage monthly expenses

●     Manages resources within the budget and oversees that Horizons operates within budget guidelines

Qualifications/Skills:

●     Bachelors’ degree in preferred areas of Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, or Education, or related field

●     Strong passion for working with youth and making a difference in the lives of students from under-served communities

●     Self-starter with ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of accountability

●     Experience with fundraising in the nonprofit, corporate and/or governmental sectors, with proven results

●     Experience with program supervision, employee management, and team building

●     Budget Management, Staff Management and Team-Building skills

●     Excellent oral, written, and computer skills

●     Willing to engage in self-directed learning

●     Experience working with elementary and middle grade students, including second language learners

●     Ability to maintain good communication between all parties, to ask for input when needed, work independently, build partnerships, and collaborate

●     Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal and time management skills
