ATTORNEY POSITIONS AVAILABLE:

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIM ADVOCACY

WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT

Connecticut Legal Services, Inc. (CLS) will hire two skilled and committed attorneys to fill grant-funded positions providing holistic, client-centered legal advocacy for domestic violence victims who seek restraining orders in Waterbury, Connecticut’s family court. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team implementing Connecticut’s first true effort at vindicating the right to counsel for every low-income person who seeks protection from domestic violence.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION

 

CLS is Connecticut’s largest non-profit law firm, providing free civil legal help to low-income people in areas including housing, consumer rights, family law, public benefits, education, immigration, employment and disability law. With a staff of more than 70 advocates and volunteers in seven offices across Connecticut, CLS fights for equal justice and improved life opportunities for more than 12,000 people every year.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The attorneys will receive extensive training in the areas of family law and courtroom advocacy, and will be expected to:

  • Maintain an active caseload representing domestic violence victims seeking restraining orders;
  • Conduct community outreach and coordinate with other social service agencies working with our clients; and
  • Help identify larger trends and issues for our clients, and work to develop strategies to respond to those trends and issues.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Deep and demonstrated commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income, vulnerable, and marginalized communities, and to CLS’ mission, vision, goals, and values;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to write persuasively and clearly and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations;
  • Demonstrated ability both to collaborate closely with colleagues and also to work independently when necessary;
  • Creativity and flexibility in solving problems and meeting challenges;
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to work late hours and/or weekends when circumstances demand it;
  • A J.D. and current good standing to practice law in Connecticut as of July 1, 2018.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Experience and training engaging sensitively and competently with crime victims and/or other people who have experienced trauma;
  • Experience in, or connections to, low-income communities and communities of color;
  • Spanish language ability;
  • Knowledge of relevant substantive and procedural law, including courtroom practice and family law.

COMPENSATION
