Position Overview

The Senior Director of Grantmaking + Capacity Building is an experienced, collaborative, and results-driven leader. They oversee all aspects of Tipping Point’s core grantmaking activities across our four issue areas: Early Childhood, Education, Employment and Housing; and the high-level coordination of our investments and capacity building activities. Specific duties include team management and strategic coordination, due diligence oversight, preparation for Board Committee meetings, budget planning and oversight, and grant impact analysis. In partnership with the Impact team, the other team that comprise Tipping Point’s programmatic efforts, this position ensures that Tipping Point’s core grantmaking is achieving maximum impact and is aligned with our overall programmatic work. 

The Senior Director manages five Senior Program Officers (SPO), and the head of the Capacity Building team, and reports to the Chief Program Officer (CPO).

The Senior Director of Grantmaking + Capacity Building will be responsible for achieving the following key areas: 

  1. Team Management + Grantmaking Oversight: Effectively manage a team of ten, including six direct reports: five Senior Program Officers, and the Director of Capacity Building. Oversee Senior Program Officers in executing on and sharpening of portfolio strategies, and facilitate shared learning and collective impact opportunities across the portfolios. Similarly, manage the Capacity Building team in ensuring that supports offered to grantees are strategic and well aligned with their needs and the grantmaking team’s goals. Oversee and lead internal strategic coordination across the grantmaking and capacity building teams, and with the impact team.
  2. Operations: Oversee the implementation of effective grantmaking/investment frameworks and tools to support the entire investment process and ensure consistency across portfolio areas. Oversee the creation of reporting tools, dashboards and analysis to ensure accountability and assess progress of grantees/investments, strategies and team members. In partnership with the CPO build and manage annual grantmaking and capacity building budget, ensuring it aligns with Tipping Point’s values, as well as the team’s operating budget. 
  3. Communications + Coordination: Manage process for producing high quality, consistent and timely books for five Board Committee meetings on a quarterly basis. Support Senior Program Officers in management of and communication to Board Committees. Serve as program point person for team-wide coordination with other Tipping Point teams.
  4. Strategy + Impact: Inform and contribute to overall programmatic strategy development, refinement, and implementation. Collaborate with colleagues across teams in service of Tipping Point’s programmatic approach; in particular, work with Impact team to determine effective ways to measure and communicate Tipping Point’s impact on its grantee and broader communities. Ensure CPO is informed of grantee and programmatic developments and serve as thought partner on key issues

What will you do?

Team Management + Grantmaking Oversight 

  • Manage and develop team; establish and hold team accountable for annual individual performance goals and support identification of professional development opportunities to expand skills and competencies. 
  • Engage in regular 1:1 check-ins with direct reports and manage team meetings, providing feedback and assessing performance regularly throughout the year.
  • Oversee and support SPOs to lead the implementation of portfolio strategies, perform due diligence on prospective grantees, and manage existing grantee relationships. 
  • Oversee the identification of needs and delivery of capacity building support in areas including program design and strategy, talent, performance management, financial sustainability, board governance, operations, and client support services.
  • Provide strategic guidance and review/edit proposals for new and existing grants. 
  • Lead annual review process across grantmaking portfolio, making funding recommendations based on client and systems level impact, progress on grant goals, and alignment with Tipping Point’s model.

Operations

  • Continually assess and refine investment tools, templates, protocols and frameworks to support strong and consistent pipeline, due diligence and grantee management and exit processes. 
  • Develop and monitor Tipping Point’s grantmaking budget including confirmation of grant amounts, tracking grant disbursements against forecasted amounts, making updates to forecasts, and working closely with the CPO, Program Operations Associate, and Finance team to ensure funds are distributed according to Board-approved plans.
  • Develop and monitor the team’s operational budget.
  • Oversee a grants administration process that is efficient and timely.

Communications + Coordination

  • Ensure development of high-quality and timely Board Committee materials and effective communication of portfolio progress and new developments to Committee members.
  • Oversee development of materials for quarterly Board Committee meetings, including grant and project proposals, updates on grantee and field developments, and reporting out on impact and progress toward goals.

Strategy + Impact

  • Partner with Impact team to implement impact strategy, including the rigorous measurement of progress toward goals and priorities.
  • Execute on grantmaking strategy of the organization and ensure team’s consistent alignment and engagement across grantees.
  • Explore and create recommendations for new interventions and potential areas for investment as needed.

What qualifications are we looking for?

Additionally, the Senior Director of Grantmaking+ Capacity Building must have:

  • Robust professional experience with a proven track record in grant-making and/or program development and leadership in the non-profit sector, ideally with well-developed knowledge in one or more of Tipping Point’s issue areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams of high-performing individuals with a focus on encouraging collaboration between team members in order to attain a common goal
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships among diverse individuals, organizations and communities. 
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and an ability to manage a portfolio of investments; experience developing and implementing strategy or complex initiatives and drive toward impact.
  • Excellent communication (oral + written) and ability to inspire and motivate others through compelling messaging. 
  • Evidence of strong commitment to creating more diverse, equitable and inclusive programs and organizations.

Tipping Point is committed to paying competitive wages. In an effort to increase equity, because we know that salary negotiations tend to have an unfair bias, we do not participate in a salary negotiation process for any candidate. We will make our best offer, and it will be the same regardless of the candidate. The annual starting salary for the Senior Director of Grantmaking+ Capacity Building role is $190,000. This position meets the exemption requirements as defined by state and federal law. Exempt employees are paid on a salaried basis, and their salary is intended to constitute their entire regular compensation, regardless of the number of hours they work; therefore, exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay.

Hybrid Work Environment

Tipping Point is committed to the safety of our staff and to facilitating connection and community with one another. While we were remote for almost two years, we are a highly in-person culture and have moved into a hybrid work environment. While managers have some discretion over the schedule, teams are generally expected to be in person Tuesday-Thursdays. All other days staff may choose to work in the office or remotely.
