Pier55, a new nonprofit public park and performance space that is part of the Hudson River Park slated to open in May 2021 is seeking an experienced External Relations Director. 


This role will be part of the senior team, reporting to the Executive Director, and will oversee all of the park’s outward facing messaging and staffing. This department will include marketing, communications, visitor services and food and beverage. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10-12 years’ experience working in marketing/sponsorship, public relations, or another communications-related field. S/He/They should have a successful track record of building and implementing marketing, communication and social media strategic plans and exceptional skills building a culture of hospitality and customer service.

Responsibilities will include:

• Collaborating with ED and developing comprehensive communication and marketing strategies in service to telling the story of Pier55 through all channels: social, website/app, press, etc and evolving those strategies through all stages of our development from construction to opening season to day to day schedule within the Park

• Overseeing the day-to-day responsibilities of communications, marketing/graphic design/videographer, visitor services, and food and beverage managers/staff with a focus on creating a culture that is collaborative, inclusive, and service-oriented

• Collaborating with Pier55 staff and Pier55 designers and construction team in order to facilitate interviews, videos and photos of site under construction, organize on-site community or press events, etc

• Developing all necessary brand tools and materials from website and app to on-site signage and content to materials needed for artistic and educational programming

• Hiring for all necessary staff in external relations departments 

• Determining technology needs for all content throughout the organization, including database management, ticketing, POS, and digital outreach

• Developing philosophy and strategic plan for visitor services dept and then partnering with visitor services manager to develop training policies, program, handbook etc for visitor services staff 

• Identifying and securing select sponsorship opportunities for artistic and education programming

• Overseeing the creation of a comprehensive and multi-faceted food and beverage program developed in collaboration with ED, Food and Beverage Manager and Park Operations Manager

• Partnering with the Executive Director and Education and Engagement Director to support community engagement and government relations

• Managing communication and necessary approval processes with Hudson River Park leadership

• Working with the Director of Operations and Finance to generate and manage the External Relations budget

• Contributing to the development of Pier55’s strategic goals as a senior leader of the organization

Additional Desired Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field 

• A passion for parks and/or the arts

• Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation

• A natural storyteller with exceptional written, verbal and/or visual communication skills 

• A track record of creating compelling narratives for other corporate or non-profit organizations

• A natural leader who thrives working with people of many different backgrounds and personalities

• A can-do, positive, flexible attitude
