Description

Roaring Fork Valley Gleaning Coordinator (1)

UpRoot Colorado (UpRoot) is a charitable organization working to manage and reduce surplus agriculture in Colorado through gleaning, experiential education, research and legislative advocacy. We envision a Colorado food system that is healthier, more equitable and humane, and economically vibrant.

We are seeking to fill the role of a part-time gleaning coordinator in Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley (RFV) who will be responsible for gleaning operations throughout the RFV. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Nurturing established relationships with local growers (i.e., farmers, home gardeners) and working to determine on a weekly basis what is available for gleaning and/or pick-up
  • Organizing valley-wide gleaning events where volunteers will come to a farm or orchard to harvest food for distribution to local hunger-relief and/or social-service agencies
  • Fostering existing relationships with local hunger-relief and social-service agencies and coordinating pick-ups and/or the distribution of gleaned food
  • Providing donating farmers with tax-credit certificates
  • Recruiting and training volunteers, as needed, and ensuring volunteers sign a waiver prior to gleaning
  • Taking photographs of gleaning events, and coordinating with UpRoot team members to create event flyers and social media posts about past/upcoming events
  • Expanding current gleaning efforts by introducing UpRoot’s work to local growers and hunger-relief and social-service agencies with whom we have not yet partnered
  • Meeting grant deliverables and expectations, including data collection, reporting and evaluation methods

Qualifications:

  • Agricultural or food-systems experience a plus
  • The ability to organize volunteers and collect and organize data
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable, personal transportation (you may be required at times to deliver gleaned food in your own vehicle)
  • The ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and a flexible schedule

This is a part-time, non-exempt role that will begin in late July and extend through early November (~15 weeks). The rate of pay is $15.15 per hour for up to 11 hours per week. Mileage reimbursement for role-specific duties is set at $0.35 per mile.
