We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Middle School Social Studies Teacher to join our outstanding faculty for a fall-term maternity leave position. This educator must have expertise in social studies, a keen understanding of the social/emotional development of sixth through eighth grade students, a passion for experiential/integrated teaching and learning, a collaborative orientation, and cultural competence with a practice informed by continual work toward increased equity and inclusion. 

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Elementary Education Degree; M.A. in Education or History/Social Sciences preferred
  • Successful full-time teaching experience
  • Knowledge of best practices ­in progressive educational pedagogy
  • A commitment to creating an affirming, inclusive, equitable, and just learning space for all students
  • A strong understanding of the developmental needs of middle school students and the ability to manage a middle school classroom positively and effectively
  • Skill in differentiating instruction for and supporting the growth and self-esteem of children who demonstrate neurodiversity in the classroom
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and administration to support and extend the objectives of the curriculum
  • Experience providing a nurturing, creative, challenging, and supportive environment that fosters mutual respect and age-appropriate levels of independence
  • Strong executive functioning skills and communication skills, both written and oral

Essential Duties

This teacher will:

  • Work closely with the teacher going on leave to prepare for the transition for an agreed upon number of days
  • Under the guidance of the teacher going on leave, follow the scope, sequence, and methodologies of the published middle school social studies curriculum while infusing their own knowledge and pedagogical approaches
  • Teach three sections of Middle School Social Studies, including a section of 6th Grade (World History), 7th Grade (American History I), and 8th Grade (American History II)
  • Differentiate instruction for a wide range of diverse learners
  • Employ clearly-defined processes and structures for planning, teaching, and reflecting to meet curricular and assessment goals
  • Communicate and work with outside specialists when necessary to meet the needs of the whole child
  • Communicate regularly with parents via Schoology, email, or phone calls
  • Meet with middle school team, administrators, and other co-­curricular teachers to collaborate and develop connections across grade levels
  • Participate in on-site professional development and faculty meetings
  • Participate in and attend middle school functions (such as Curriculum Night)
